Rebels kill nine Russian soldiers

VLADIKAVKAZ, Russia - Rebels in Chechnya killed nine Russian soldiers in raids and land mine explosions, an official with the Kremlin-backed Chechen administration said Tuesday.

Five of the soldiers died in rebel shellings of Russian outposts across the region, and another four were killed when Russian military convoys hit rebel land mines near the town of Shali and the village of Tangi-Chu in Chechnya's southern mountains, the official said on condition of anonymity.

In Chechnya's capital, Grozny, rebels clashed with pro-Moscow police officers Monday, wounding two of them. One rebel was killed in the clash, the official said.

Russian forces launched artillery barrages on suspected rebel camps in Chechnya's southern mountains and conducted security sweeps, detaining at least 220 people, according to the Chechen official.

Russian troops pulled out of Chechnya after a 1994-96 war that left the region lying in ruins and mired in lawlessness. The rebel province had de-facto independence until September 1999 when the Kremlin launched the second war in response to rebel incursions on Dagestan and apartment-building bombings that killed some 300 people in several Russian cities and were blamed on rebels.

Strange, nothing in the "independent" russian press which is always happy to report things like that. There was however a car bomb explosion in Vladikavkaz that injured nine soldiers (they were driving by in a truck), killed a woman and a one year old.

In my opinion, and many others on here, Chechen's are not freedom fighter's or rebels.....they are nothing but trashy terrorists. Not even intelligent enough to mount an actual operation, every thing I read about them just ltalks about their "little" attacks, more like terrorist actions.

Anyway, I have to admit that as a Finn I have had some attitude problems with russians but the russians I have met here have polished my image of them a lot :)
