View Full Version : A Question for the Marines out there

After you complete basic training, how is your job chosen? Is it based on leadership skills that you show during Boot or what? I'm a future Marine myself (dispite my username), and am very interested in learning what I can do with my future.

Also, if this belongs on another board, I'm sorry. I'm kinda new here, and this really doesn't fit into any category. And Off-topic specificly says Non-military on it. Thanks for understanding.

it depens on your contract i beleive. i have infantry secured for my mos after bootcamp. but some people go in with an open contract and the marine corps graciously assigns them an mos.

The first step is to go to your local Marine Corps Recruiter. He can answer any and all questions you might have.

When I went in in '93 to choose an MOS you had to score well on the ASVAB. After I took the test the Gunny asked what I wanted to do and like a dumb@ss I shrugged my shoulders so he listed Admin, Supply and Legal as three possible fields. The way it was explained then was if I washed out of Admin I'd get dropped to Supply or maybe just get dropped to the grunts.

I don't know about today but when I was in everybody that went open contract did not like what they got. Those that loved the infantry became cooks and those that hated humping the hills all the time and wanted to be cooks or admin got infantry.

There are some MOS that you actually have to test for like to be in the band or linguistics. Also, I believe if you want to go Combat Correspondant, they have typing and writing tests you have to take. Those were the ones I had heard about during my four years, they might have more today. I'd ask the recruiter what jobs are open and ask how you can get into them, but I wouldn't go open contract - just my 2 cents.

The 0321 MOS is a primary one now also but you have to have the right GT score and pass the Indoc. My primary was 0351 Assaultman/Demolitions and then secondary was 0321 Reconaissanceman.

When I go to my recruiter, I am going to have no questions. I am going to find out what I can and can't do on my own. I've heard too many stories from people that have been ripped off by recruiters. I plan to jointhe DEP program. And I'm sure if you do a quick google search you can find the many stories floating around the net. My JROTC ASI (serospace Science Instructor) was once a recruiter and he spent a whole class giving me pointers. I've heard from other cadets who have literally been stalked by recruiters.

I plan to go in there, tell him who's boss and enlist in the DEP. I know that I can leave any time I want. The only time I can't leave is after I've had my Military code of justice briefing. After that I'm in for good. I can go for the plane ride to boot, but until I have that briefing, I'm under no obligations.

The MOS's I'm looking at are 0321 (Reconasance). I'm not sure if I'd rather Force Recon or Battalion Recon. Embassy guard could be cool too. I'd like to see the world. But at the same time I feel like I should be serving my country, not getting a free ride to some exotic country.

I dont want to talk to recruiters. I want to talk to the people who have been there and done that, and don't have a quota to fill.

That leads me to my other question, does Embassy gard have a technical job name and MOS?

"The MOS's I'm looking at are 0321 (Reconasance). I'm not sure if I'd rather Force Recon or Battalion Recon"

Listen up stud, if I had a dollar for everytime I heard some boot say he was going Recon or Force Recon, I could have retired years ago.
Why don't you concentrate on making it through boot camp before having your "operator" illusions. Besides, you can't get a Recon/Force Recon "contract" you can go grunt (thats 0311 bulletcatcher) or 2512 or 13 (I forgot which) Field Radio Operator and lat move in AFTER you take AND PASS the indoc.

Also, go ahead and walk into the Marine Recruiting Office like you're the boss and then go ahead and tell the recruiter that you'll leave whenever you want (I still don't get what you're implying with that). He'll tell you to get the **** out and don't come back. We (the Marines) are having no problems filling the recruiting quotas. There's always another snot-nosed mother****er who thinks he knows everything and wants to join the Corps.

Take it one thing at a time with your mouth shut and eyes and ears open and you may just walk across that mother****ing grinder.
and oh yeah, then you'll be a boot Pvt/Pfc, but at least you'll have earned the title MARINE.

I read you loud and clear on that part. But I'm no stud. I'm not like the rest of em out there. I've dreamed of becomming a Marine since I was 4 years old. I'm not looking to be some kind of war hero conjured (is concoctured even a word?)up out of some video game. I want to serve my country, and do something to make this world full of hell a better rock then it was yesterday.

As far as recruiters go, I've heard way too many stories to want to play one out firsthand.

I dont want to join the Corps pay my time and then just pack my bags and leave. I'm looking for a home. I want to have a future. And whatever my job may be in the future... Its like I said. If I had a choice, I'd choose it, but I'll go wherever the Marine Corps needs me most.

"but I'll go wherever the Marine Corps needs me most."

Music to my ears.

Just remember, most of the time people go into the other services expecting to get something out of it (college money, transferable skills, etc), just remember the Corps doesn't need you. You'll only get out of your service what you put into it. If you stay motivated and work hard, good things SHOULD happen to you. It doesn't always work out that way, even though it should. All those silly assed commercials about not doing it for the money, the Corps is a calling not a job, etc. They are all true. If you go through your four years bitching about how some asshole SSgt ****ed you over or your Capt was an idiot, you'll just hate every second being in. Look for the good times and enjoy them when they happen because when it all boils down to it, the bad times always out number the good, but you'll always remember all the good times. The only times you remember how lousy it was will be when you catch up with guys you served with over a beer and those times become punchlines.
Remember, closed mouth, open ears and eyes and you'll do fine,
Semper Fidelis,
Now PUSH! :-)

CAn I quote myself?

Now, everyone plays a video game or two, watches black hawk down, figures out wat a SAW is and figures that they would make an awesome Ranger or SEAL team member. What else is new? Now, its great to see that people are taking interest in our military, but why join if all you want to do is grow a mullet and ask people to call you snake? I mean, sure snake is badass, and everyone wants be be badass, but be origional. HOw many movies are out there that someone ex-military gets pulledout of retirement and is put to duty? Richard Dean Anderson(MacGyver) stars as Colonel JAck O'niel in StargateSG1. Solid Snake in Metal Gear is pulled out of retirement, they;re all the same. Now everyone sees howbadass they are, and figure if they join ROTC, and somehow get into Westpoint, they can be a solid Snake spitting image. IT doesn't work that way. There are actually tests that you have to take to get into the miltary.

There are too many kids my age saying they want to be a Ranger, or Delta Force, or a SEAL or something. YOu know, there are other Militray jobs out there.

I know, I know. I see them all the time. I'm not like that though.

If I got a nickel for everytime I heard that... Not to talk down on you, mister but words only get you so far. You can't talk about doing it, you can't think about doing it, you got to prove you can do it. This was a motto from a t-shirt I seen. It's true one hundred percent. All you guys can talk about becoming a Green Beret, DEVGRU/Seal, Force Recon or Delta Force Operator, but you got to prove you can do it. I've done all that talk and such a billion times before and my lifetime and trust me, it doesn't help. Good luck kid. May you have the best of luck in accomplishing your goal.It is quite amazing that everybody wants to be a HSLD kind of guy and not a Surveyor,or Fixed wing mechanic or just something that they can use once they get out. I guess I fell in the same young stud category too it's just that i didnt know any better. we didnt have all the info you would ever need and more like we do today to make the decision that much easier. i knew I wanted to be "Special Forces" of somekind I just didnt know the difference to help me with my decision..............point being is that I just did it. no need to talk to people their experience doesnt relate to you anyway. Just realize what you want and do it and STFU and listen. There is nothing here or what I or Mooch or Molsen can tell you to make it easier. You wannna be one of us then you have to pay in blood and sweat like we all have for the last 229 years to become a Marine!!!!! Forget about Recon,if you want to be a grunt no problem but you have to crawl then walk before you can run!!!!

Puller,
You hit the nail on the head with this bro:
"It is quite amazing that everybody wants to be a HSLD kind of guy and not a Surveyor,or Fixed wing mechanic or just something that they can use once they get out"

Spetzkid,
When I joined, I was supposed to go Machine Gunner to the USMCR unit right down the road from my house on LI. Well another USMCR grunt unit in upstate NY got folded (right after DS/DS) and all the grunts came to Weapons Co/2/25. I got a letter in boot saying that my chosen MOS was closed and that I had three to chose from:
1) Admin
2) Cooks
3) Radio Operator
In my boot mind, I didn't want to be any ****ed up REMF admin or cook so I took RTO. Guess what, I hated carrying that Prick and a Kick all over (but I still didn't want to be admin or cooks). Long story to short story, later on I got to LAT move to Intel and I've been loving it ever since. And I've gotten to work with more HSLD mother****ers than I could count. Could I be one? Maybe 10 years ago. My point is this, be happy at what you do. Everyone has to do their parts. Besides, when I was in Iraq, there were many times when our cooks, supply guys and admin weenies were manning the lines with the rest of us and they were ****ing awesome.
Do your job.
