KABUL , Afghanistan -- Charges have been filed against two U.S. Soldiers under military law for alleged assault against two individuals who were being temporarily detained at a forward operating base detention site located in the Oruzgan Province in southern Afghanistan .
The two Soldiers are accused of striking the detainees who were in their custody. The Soldiers allegedly punched the detainees on the chest, shoulders and stomach. The nature of the assault did not require medical attention for either of the detainees.
“The command remains committed to investigate all allegations of misconduct and will hold individuals responsible for their actions consistent with US military law," said Brig. Gen. Jack Sterling, Deputy Commanding General Combined Joint Task Force-76 (support).
The charges include conspiracy to maltreat, assault, and dereliction of duty. The allegations, if substantiated, could lead to disciplinary action.

Why does this suprise anyone?
Why is there a misconception that the Americans are a bunch of crazed cowboys? Im not suprised at all they would be looking into mistreatment of prisoners.

My point was to show that they are putting out press releases when there's an incident... something they HAVEN'T done in the past until the press is tipped off.

I guess because people get scared if they dont have complete control of a situation from home. They dont want people to think for themselves or work outside the square, just do what the pen pusher tell them to do and take the hit if it goes wrong.
David, I think this is part of the inevitable process of more transparency. There have been one too many scandals blown up by the press and now people think there is a major problem, and that the only way to solve it is air it in public. I dont see how any good can come of this.
the good thing that can come of this is that the average joe (or ali in this case) will see that Americans can't just do whatever the hell they want resulting in him feeling safer.

Ha! you mean the chairborne heroes like yourself will feel more involved and on top of the situation. All the while still having no idea, just more ammo to judge others from home with.

Although on the other hand, you also have to weigh the fact on whether your average Iraqi will even take notice of the US making themselves more transparent.
Iraqi mentality is not equal to our mentality.
We may see it as beeing hones about ones self, the iraqi's will possibly see it in a completely different light.
I mean come on , you have a Imam getting TV time who says spiders as big as chairs......
