Ok, so im turning 18 this november and i would like to purchase a rifle. I would like something that i can plink with and hunt with, but also be in a caliber that is cheap and widely available. I do not want a .22 but maybe something like a .308 or .223 or even a 30'06 . I was thinking something along the lines of a Mini-14 or 30 or possibly something like a remington or savage bolt action? many suggestions are welcome. thanks for your time.

If you are hunting, I wouldn't get something in .223 since its not a legal hunting caliber in most states.

Since cost seems a big thing I would look at an SKS, and that will let you hunt small deer and on down, 8-10cent a round ammo and a rifle that will cost you under a $100. Depending on what you want to hunt you will probrobly need something with a bit more stopping power however.

I agree. An SKS would be an excellent choice. Affordable weapon, affordable ammo. Not much more you can ask for.

In some states, it's illegal to hunt with an AR. If if it is legal, the gun must not hold more than 11 rnds, so that limits you to a 10rd mag.

I hear good things about 22-250's and .243's.

I own a .243 and made great shots with it. I now use a .308 that I use for hunting and long range shooting.

The 308 I have is a Remington VS with a Harris bipod and a Simmons 44 Mag scope. It's pretty much an all-round purpose rifle. I can hit spent rifle casings at 100 yards with ease and coke cans at 600 yards like a piece of cake.

Pic of my .308:

And my AR (waiting for the carry handle to come in):

I now have a Surfire clamp-on red filter on my light now.

I wouldnt even count on getting a 14.5" barreled (or shorter) M4.
14.5" (and shorter) AR's (AK's too etc) are SBR's and you need a Class 3 or a SBR license to own legally. The license is a $200 tax fee and a few month wait (on average). Not to mention, you have to be 21 years of age to qualify for the Class 3 and SBR license from the ATF.
Aslo, 99.9% of anybody that sells guns, wont sell SBR's and Class 3 weapons without the buyer having the propper license.

The shortest AR barrel you can have legally w/o license, is a 14.7" barrel w/ a permanent A2 flashhider or a 14.5" barrel with a permantant phantom flash hider, or a 11.5" barrel w/ a permanant 5.5" flash hider.

The barrel length has be 16" or more w/o having to pay the ATF tax fee.

ASLO: Those rifle pics you posted....are no where near cheap....

Either an SKS or Mosin Nagant I would suggest. Cheap guns that can work wonders and cheap rounds that also works wonders.

the rounds can be made into hollowpoints with sandpaper and a drill.

or you can load your own .30 rounds.

failing that, a Mosin Nagant.

My first rifle was a Swedish Mauser 6.5x55mm for a little over $100.

I have heard that Mini-14s and -30s are fun to shoot at the range but not much good for anything else, but I have never shot one.

SKSs are cheap and fun and very sturdy. But if you have the cash, I say go for the best of the AK knockoffs that you can afford; you probably can't hunt with them, but its good for everything else.

So...if he's going to be hunting....then why is everyone posting military rifles?

Just get a bolt action 22-250. Those things are awsome, or a bolt action .308 rifle from Remington, or Winchester.

There's an abundant amount of .308 out there. Cabelas has 200 linked 150gr 7.62X51 FMJ NATO (L21A2) rounds for like $60 I think. Those are great for plinking.

Although, I dont recommend tracers, but they are fun.

Whats your budget? If $1k or over go with the ar-15. If under go with a nice bolt action rifle. The mini is fine and dandy for screwing around but anything beyond that it just doesnt cut it.

And if you need cheap ammo stay away from the 30.06 most of the surplus 30.06 the korean crap and so on I have shot was just that crap. Your looking at around $.40 a shot with the 30.06 for cheap ammo.

Something I would never suggest doing. In the good old days, people managed to kill themselves by doing just that.

you make it sound like they would still be loaded on the case.

it's really easy to do; pull the bullet, put the bullet in a vice, then sand away the copper on the nose, then drill a little hole in it, and if you want cut the hollow with a knife, then you reload the round.

or you could just buy ready-made hollow points and load them.

.30 bullets aren't hard to come by.
