I thought I would raise the bar a little and add an intellectually stimulating thread over our current slump of "gangsta style" "ultimate fighting" and "penguin clubbing" topics.

Anyway, post some of your favorite art:

Contemporary, Byzantine, abstract, Roman sculpture, equestrian style, Hellenistic, renaissance, Neolithic, cave art, anything!

Bust of Nefertiti

"And the heiress, great in the palace, fair of face, adorned with the double plumes, mistress of happiness, endowed with favours, at hearing whose voice the king rejoices, the chief wife of the king, his beloved, the lady of the two lands, Nefertiti, may she live for ever and always."

Dead Christ

This is an amazing piece and quite powerful and significant for the time as it was one of the first depictions of the human form to be shown in a graduated depth, most notably, feet first. All other pieces of the time are done in profile, or from the side, never in this fashion. Quite a remarkable artistic achievement for circa 1500's!

Jan van Eyck. Man in a Red Turban

This is actually the first self portrait re-creation and a beautiful transitional piece moving away from representational figurative and symbolic art into aspects of naturalism and realism.

Creation of Adam

I am sure many are familiar with this piece

http://members.ozemail.com.au/~drbrash/artemisia/images/judith1x-02-01.jpg

his is a dramatic and brutally graphic version of this biblical scene, but less so than a larger and even bloodier setting by Artemisia around 1620. She based her first glimpse on Caravaggio's famous painting from c. 1598-1599, but enlivens the action with realism and powerful female protagonists.

Judith was a Jewish widow of noble rank in Bethulia, a town besieged by the army of the Assyrian general Holofernes. She approached his tent as an emissary and captivated him with her beauty. He ordered a feast with much wine. After he passed out in his tent, Judith and her maid Abra saw their opportunity. Judith decapitated Holofernes with his sword and smuggled his head back to Bethulia. On seeing her trophy, the townsfolk routed the leaderless Assyrians. The story is an allegory picturing Judith as Judaism in triumph over its pagan enemy.

Poor restoration has cost the women's foreheads the furrows indicating intense concentration and effort.

Wow, that is really condescending Ducimus. No wonder everybody loves you around here.

I never really spend a lot of time looking at the "art" you posted. Funny I always called them paintings or sculptures. But I won't let minor details get in the way of a promising thread. Since I think you are trying to refer to cultural pursuits, I for one am a big fan of Beethoven, Mahler, Pucchini, Strauss and the like. I guess it all depends on your perspective. I never could sit still long enough to appreciate paintings or sculpture. To each his own.

My favorite piece of his though is the melting clocks one. I think its called "the persistence of time or being" something like ythat.

This is just an artistic representational ideal of the human form in a naturalistic fashion. The piece is symbolic, and one is supposed to view the art within the context of its religious theme.

In early artistic history, a rise in iconoclast movements started, which was an attempt to keep art purely representational, and in no way, a means of self promotion by the artist which could sway the context and meaning of historical and religious representation. Many works of art were in-turn destroyed.

I don’t recall any sculpture or art depicting a ****** act of any sort, though the first use of **** photos as a means of ****** desire were first used in the late 1800's or early 1900's. They were however seen as morally harmful and obscene, thus the images were confiscated by local authorities. They were by no means as graphic as today’s ****ography. Nonetheless, some 'underground' artists may have indeed created pieces for clients depicting female genitalia or ****** acts; though this was not a common trend or social norm as in today context. Apparently, the origins and root of ****ography in art go back as far as the 1500’s, though, I have seen none that I can recall. I will search for some if anyone is interested.

I'm not really one for art, as in paintings et cetera. Don't know why, it just isn't me. Although I do particularly like the way the Ancient Egyptians depicted their lives, especially their gods. I use to spend ages, when I was around 10, drawing them, mostly Horus and Thoth... Again I have no idea why, I just use to enjoy it... I'm weird like that :).

Does anyone know of Tom Lea? He did some very graphic and very moving pieces about Marines and Soldiers fighting in the Pacific during WWII. I like his stuff.

Have any of you Brits around here seen the gallery on the top floor of the Imperial War museum in London? I was last there in 1998, and there was quite a bit of good stuff there. Not just paintings, but a number of bronze busts. Many of them were of famous characters (Churchill, Kitchener, Monty, etc.) but the ones that I liked the most were "Tommy Atkins, 1918" and the like.
