I have two of them - a Colt M1991 and a Kimber Classic. I installed extended mag wells on both, and put an aftermarket hammer, trigger, and beaver tail on the colt.
They are sweet. Only 9 rounds, but hey, if I ever needed it, I figure 9 is enough.

Nine lol... just one would be pretty messy. Not quite sure on the ballistics of a .45 but aren't they too powerful for CQB?

I don't think so. Less to worry about overpenetration than 9mm. .45 averages around 800-900 fps, while 9mm is 1100-1300 fps. .45 rounds also weigh about twice as much as 9mm.

Well, yeah, you could take a .22 out and shoot a beast in the ear. I would rather have a .30 something or other and shoot said beast through the lungs.

9mm rounds will not puncture a bear's skull, even at point blank. No joke. I've heard several campers and homeowners (bear comes into their kitchen) attest to this after personal experience.
And I wouldn't count on a bear dropping immediately from a torso hit with any sort of handgun. It might bleed to death a few hours after it ripped you limb from limb, though.
I don't know a huge amount about handguns, but I *do* know a decent amount about bears. And they are darned effective killing machines.

So what should you use to take down a bear?
Really anything if it has the power to kill the bear and not wound it. For black bear you could use a 270 Winchester, Shotgun with 2 3/4" or 3" slug, For the big bears you simply do not want to discuss anything under the .338 Mag. with 250 grain premium bullets. I carry a Brno (CZ model 602) in .458 Lott, and highly recommend .375 H&H's on up into the big .40's. Rifles used for the big bears.

Damn if I wanted to buy a gun I'd have to be a member of a gun club for 6 months and have a need for it, that gun would have to be a .22. 6 months after that I would be able to buy a bigger gun but only if the gun club that I go to uses that kind of weapon. And then I'd have to renew the license every year.
So I just joined the home guard instead, got a G3 for free. Sometime after April I'll get my brand new Aimpoint sight for free, not the old Comp M2. It's a completly new design, it's hard to believe that the Swedish Home Guard will get the most modern red dot sight in the world.
The best thing is the ammo is free, and I get to have fun out in the "sand box" about once a month. Not nearly enough for my liking though.
Btw. If I were to come across a bear in the woods would my G3 be enough to put it down, should the need arise. I know almost nothing about hunting, I'm a city boy.

Yep I can keep my weapon at home, the only requirement is that I keep it separated into 3 parts. I don't need to keep it locked in a safe either, we are issued barrel locks instead (has to be used). Here is a link to the company that makes them. http://www.amlock.se/
So we keep the key to the barrel lock, the trigger mechanism and the rest of the weapon hidden in separate places.
You can always choose to keep it locked up in a safe place at the regiment that your unit belongs to, this has to be done if your leaving your home for a period longer than 5 weeks. Ammo on the other hand is now strictly forbidden to keep at home, it's very likely you'll get kicked out of your unit if you do. A couple of years ago this wasn't the case, but since a couple of stupid morons :bash: used thier weapon and ammo to shot at things (peoples, animals etc.), we have been taken away that right. And there are a lot of people that would like to see our weapons taken away from us also. Strange thing is most of those peoples are hunters.

You can buy an after market .357 Sig drop in barrel for it and use same magazines or put in a drop in 9mm barrel and use 9mm magazines. The Glock models in .45 are the G30,G36.G21 and the new G37 in .45 GAP.

The Swedish homeguard is a light infantry unit with high alert status, in 2 hours we are supposed to be where we are asked to be. Thus we keep our weapon at home because it's quicker than first going to the regiment, collect your weapon and then going to where you were supposed to go. The ammo is collected by the company quartermaster. He gets space for more ammo this way, compared to first loading up the truck with 50 rifles, then getting the support weapons and all the ammo somewhere in there.
I guess it could work to have all the weapons in the same place in all the major cities, but out in the countryside where the nearest regiment is 200 miles away this wouldn't work.

I don't know when but somewhere in the late 90's before I joined, it was decided by the "higher ups" that no ammo could be stored at home. This was because of a series of embarrassing incidents, where stupid :bash: home guards men fired thier weapons when they shouldn't have. Needles to say they were kicked out of their unit and fined, some were put in prison depending on what they'd done. These incidents were not many in numbers but enough to make a change, mainly becuase the home guard was hanging by a lose thread as it was.
