The days are darker the wind is stronger and in most places its starting to get damn cold at night. Yes it's that time of year again so i thought it would be COOL to post some Festive military winter photos.

If anyone has any from their country's armed forces please post 'em.

British Royal Marine Commando's Artic Warfare, Norway.

This was kind of a warfare. In december 1998 my hometown were struck by a blizzard of the century and the military had to save us. This was in Gävle (95 000 inhabitants), Sweden, and were not used to this much snow:

I actually lived in the apartment building to the right in the picture

The military had to call in Bv-206, choppers and huge snowplowers.

Luckily only one person were killed. I senior died in heartfailure when no paramedic were able to reach him. The blizzard lasted for 2 days and it took a week before the city was up and running again...

Mount Hermon is the highest point in the Golan Heights. Sayeret Alpinistim protect the Israeli surveillance post at the summit. IIRC, it's within a few miles of Damascus. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Allmost every conscript in Sweden has to do this experience.A

U don´t feel anything, its a chock and your body and brain shuts down. After a while (just a few seconds but it feels like minutes) you gain controll over your body and your mind. If your able you have to ask the commander : "PRIVATE XXXXX WESTER ASKS THE PERMISSION TO CLIMB OUT, SIR!"

Usually u can talk straight and he asks "WHAT , I DIDNT HERE YOU!" for a few times. But after a while you can climb out/get pulled out of the icy water.

Its a experience!

Some of the pictures are from K4/Norrlandsjägarna in Arvidsjaur. The Cold wether center is a part of K4 and I19. K4 tranes ragers and I19 tranes tankcrews and antiarmor soldiers (pansarskytte).

Here is a picture of K4:

Here you can read about the K4 (ranger) regiment and other things about the K4/armens jägarbataljons (the site has less information at English that on Swedish but it is always something):

@ Lenin
You've posted some pictures of French, Austian and Belgian soldiers in Sweden. Do these pices come from famous Swedish Armed Forces Centre for Cold Weather Operation in Arvidsjuar? Do You have any info about winter training courses conducted in the Centre?
@ Sp2c
What units are the soldiers shown on the pics from? Where were these pics taken? In Norway?

Hi Mike, the French and the Belgian pics yes, in arvidsjaur. The Austrian pics is actually in Austria, a joint exercise with Swedes.

Regards

Note: Name change:)

I hope in that kinda situation commander isnt def. :/

Guess it differs from unit to unit. We were requierd to first sing a song and then ask permission to climb up. I guess it's at least a good 45-90 sek in the water before you get up. Could be even more...

Something that should be added to all this, to understand the full experience is that you dont walk straight into a hot cosy sauna!

You get up, then you run to your rucksack and try to pull up your dry change of clothes. Which isn't the easiest task to do in temperatures well below zero. You then fiddle around for a good few minutes getting dressed. This is the point when it really starts getting cold!
When dressed you start to run! You then proceed to run until you don't freeze anymore. Then, and not until then are you done.

The kind of cold you feel is very hard to explain. Not being able to feel your hands or feet, all while trying to get dressed and tie your boots is, in lack of a better word cold as a mothahumper.
When you run and start to get the blood flowing you get a pinching sensation all over your body but especially in your feet and hands and it hurts like a son of a bitch.

It is by far the coldest I have ever been! Not the actuall bath but trying to get warm again.

Älähän nyt taas...

The pr/educational video is available for the public, not just for internal use. Link here. (http://media.tietotalo.fi/mil/talvitaistelu_movie.wmv)

From Answers.com: (http://www.answers.com/public%20relations)
Public relations (abbr. PR) - the art or science of establishing and promoting a favorable relationship with the public.

Note: the public includes the future conscripts.

Wrong. As you perhaps know, nowadays education films are directed by civilians in private companies, not by only the FDF as in the past. That means, most of them are then also available for public and why not? There is actually nothing classified in them.

We don't here in the firm waste money for commercial pr-films except "tee työtä, jolla on tarkoitus" -recruitment videos shown almost every day in the TV (targeted for reservists and educated people). PR for who and why? Don't once again try to make me laugh. You with a couple of other non-mentioned nicnames have succeeded in that more often than once. Usually happens when trying to play an expert with zero-information. Ok, i know most of the people for example around here can't see the difference.

About future conscripts: there are own informative videos specially made for such target group shown in high schools etc. places. Since the conscription we have no need for US style commercial to persuade high school kids to join the army and better army's reputation in public view.

Lazarou

Wrong.

You're just whining out of pleasure, aren't you?

PR for who and why?

You claimed it's meant for internal use only, which of course isn't the case.
It's part of the new Talvitaisteluopas (Winter Warfare Guide) education package, which is its main purpose. The video is however also available for the public (check the link I provided) and:

Lisäksi elokuvan tarkoituksena on herättää luottamusta puolustusvoimien talvikoulutuksen erityisosaamiseen, toisaalta perinteisiin ja toisaalta uusimpiin tutkimustuloksiin ja välineisiin.

Sometimes i like to do so. Specially i like to offence guessing and disinformation.

As you know, we don't here make any pure commercial PR-films. Too expensive entertainment for almost nothing. No hollywood around here.

"You claimed it's meant for internal use only, which of course isn't the case."

I didn't claim anything. Do you think external use makes films automatically pr-entertainment? Time for the Master of Logic award.

For some (stupid) fundamental reasons most of the other education films (very similar ones to Talvitaistelu) still remain unpublished. Have you ever seen them?

Swedes racing towards the highest point in sweden, kebnekaise, unfortunley only 2111 m, IMO a bit poor

You try climbing the Eastern Face with full combat gear in temperatures down to -30 degrees celcius and ****ty weather, then talk about "poor".
Its not all about how high it is.
