Mainly just beer for alcoholic (McEwan's scotch ale is the best beer ever). Occassionally some Maker's, Crown Royal, or Stoli.

For non-alcoholic: OJ, water, Gatorade, tea. That's pretty much it.

Am I right that in the USA we call Glenmorangie Scotch as short for Scotch Whiskey? I don't drink expensive scotches b/c I am poor but what we call Scotch in the USA is my preferred hard liquor. Can't afford single malts but like Dewars when I get it. Not sohpisticated enough to appreciate it neat - mix it with soda. Also, in the summer a gin and tonic is good. Have been known to make martinis on occassion and connisseours tell me I do it right - only because I got a martini book and figured it out.

Any beers, really not picky. Do tend to like imports from England - Newcastle, Guiness, Bass. I know the Europeans will squeal but I do drink light American beers on occasion - Bud Light, Coors Light, Miller Lite.

I only really like red wines and I tend to go for Merlot over Cab Sauv. - don't really know why and can't tell you much about tannin (sp?) or any of that stuff. I probably drink more wine than anything else now that I am an old fart!

When I was young I drakn way too much beer - so I try to be on best behaviour these days.

scoone - I'm with on the single malt part my point was that in America whiskey refers to many different things. For example, Jack Daniels is a whiskey made in TN that is affectionatley called 'sippin whiskey' here in the states. Same with bourbon whiskey like Old Charter. Here we often just call it bourbon to help differentiate. I think we call glenmorangie 'scotch' instead of whiskey to help us differentiate between scotch whiskey and whiskey like Jack Daniels or Old Charter. Make sense? I am not sure about this - so if someone else knows for sure step in. I think glenmorangie is what USA calls scotch, I know glenfiddich is.

Hard to get inexpensive spanish wines here in TN. We have some restrictive liquor laws. Unless you want to spend a lot of $ you have to get Australian or domestic, even the more common European wines (French and German) that I see on the shelves tend to be pricier. I tend to buy Australian Merlot or sometimes Shiraz and I stay from the named brands (like Yellowtail). How does the spanish wine you refer to compare to Australian wines? Just curious

Bourbon can only come frome Bourbon County Kentucky. Like Champagne only comes from the Champagne region of France. Jack Daniels is distilled in a dry county, that always cracked me up. Most Canadian and American whiskeys are blended unlike single malt scotch. Then there's always Irish whiskey like Jamesons..... There are some decent wines produced in Virginia.

I did not know that about Bourbon. So strictly speaking, Beam and Daniels and Old Charter are similar its just that Old Charter gets to be bourbon b/c its from KY? That is interesting. Makes sense though, what with Bourdeau wine, Champagne, etc.

So is what cut and scoone call "whiskey" that comes from from scotland what we call scotch here in the states? I have always thought of glenmorangie, glenfiddich, etc. as scotch and Jameson's and Bushmills as whiskey. Maybe I am off on this.

BTW, Have you ever tried sangria, it's very typical in center-Southern Spain. It's a mixture of red wine and fruits. Served cold.

1 lemon
1 lime
1 orange
1 1/2 cups rum ( we usually put Brandy)
1/2 cup white sugar
750 milliliter red wine
1 cup orange juice

Have the fruit, rum, wine, and orange juice well chilled. Slice the lemon, lime and orange into thin rounds and place in a large glass pitcher. Pour in the rum and sugar. Chill in refrigerator for 2 hours to develop the flavors.
2 When ready to serve, crush the fruit lightly with a wooden spoon and stir in the wine and orange juice. Adjust sweetness to taste.

Yes, Scotch whiskey only comes from Scotland, it can be single malt or blended like Dewars. Blends are usually blended for smoothness whereas single malt retains more of the earthy peat taste. All scotches are whiskey, but not all whiskey is scotch.

I only drink beer. ;)

That is simply not true Joe, while bourbon got it's name from Bourbon county Kentucky...it can come from anywhere in the US. Only bourbon distilled in Kentucky may be called Kentucky Burbon.

Ahhhhhhh I must have heard it wrong on that show I saw. But they were right about the originator charring the wine casks to get the wine out and then shipping it to New Orleans in them giving it the smokey taste commonly associated with it.

Just for clarification--Guinness is NOT from England. It's brewed in Dublin, Ireland. Admittedly most of the world doesn't care about the difference between England and Ireland, but if you're in South Boston and say that Guinness is from "England," you'd probably have a fistfight on your hands.

Also, pubs within a stone's throw of Edinburgh Castle not only served Coors, but ADVERTISED the fact they had it. They had primarily European beers, but just for the record, Europeans do drinks stuff like Coors on occassion.

In regards to to the whisky debate here's something just to confuse things further - Whisky is Scottish, Whiskey is Irish, the way most of you have been spelling it would have most Scottish distillers foaming at the mouth. If I'm looking for a scotch (Which means a whisky from Scotland, not from Ireland) it's got to be a single malt, most blends are crap, particular favourites of mine include Oban, Isle of Jura, McCallan and Cragganmore (I may have spelled that last one wrong). If it's Irish stuff that wets your whistle then look no further than Black Bush - lovely stuff.

Now, to clarify a clarification, although Guinness originated in Ireland, it's not only brewed there, it's actually brewed in about fifty different countries across the world and is altered slightly to suit the local tastes.

Whats Icehouse?

http://www.icehouse.com/ageCheck.asp

"WE BROKE THE MOLD WHEN WE MADE ICEHOUSE.

Back in 1993, a bunch of us at Plank Road Brewery were sitting around talking, when we noticed that most beers out there were a little full of themselves pretentious and impersonal.

What was missing was a beers beer. A handcrafted beer with a smooth, never-watered-down taste. So, we came up with Icehouse, the mainstream alternative to all those other beers.

Turns out, other people are as passionate about Icehouse as we are. Its been awarded the American-Style Ice Lager Gold Cup at the 1996 and 1998 World Beer Cup competitions, as well as the American Dry Lager bronze metal at the 1994 Great American Beer Festival.

So, if you haven't tried an Icehouse yet, give it a try. And if your'e a loyal Icehouse drinker...thanks. All about ICEHOUSE"

It was in some ways similar to what americans would call PGA - a clear alcohol usually made from corn and around 90% alcohol. I bet that is what you think of as vodka, huh?

There's a thread about this somewhere, but it went to ****.

Post your favourite whiskies.

Personally my preference goes towards peaty, Islay Single Malts.

#1 Ardbeg - The peaty single malt whose taste explodes in your mouth.
http://www.wineshop-fujii.com/HardLiquer-Picture/Ardbeg%2010years.jpg

#2 Laphroaig - Seaweed and peat, cant get better.
http://www.maltbank.com/images/laphroaig'10.jpg

#3 Caol Ila - Wonderful. Just plain old wonderful.
http://www.akk.org/~urs/whisky/islay/caol_ila/caol_ila_12y.png

#4 Lagavulin - Oh my, can you say salty atlantic?

http://math-www.uni-paderborn.de/~andi/Whisky/BOTBIG/Lagavulin-16.gif

Of course I enjoy the odd blended, but it doesnt get any better than single malt. Your turn my friends.

Today I picked up a bottle to put in my little bar so when my Father in Law comes over I can give him a drink. I usually just stick to beer. So anyway......it reminded me of a story my Dad told me about the time he was coming back from Alaska during WWII, he was up there working heavy equipment on the Alaskan Highway. He was on the train and a Canadian soldier sat down next to him. My Dad said he looked like he needed a drink so as they talked my Dad pulled out a bottle of pretty low end whisky that he had in his bag and gave him the bottle and told him to keep it. The soldier was grateful for the bottle. He took a drink and whistled. My Dad apologized for the quality saying it was just like "cat claws and razor blades" going down. The soldier smiled and said it was "just right, if it was any worse I couldn't drink it, if it was any better you woulda kept it" p-)

On holiday one time my friends and I started drinking about midday. I only drank vodka (black label Smirnoff) and they were on the usual crap (Stella). In that time we were playing the playstation and invented a new game where you cut up news paper headlines and randomly assort them into new, more interesting, headlines (e.g. "Hugo and Vindaloo kill Clooney with paedophile love"). Anyway, some friends decided to go down to KFC for some food. At this time I started to feel a bit dodgy and went for a little nap.

My friends returned with KFC whilst I was asleep, I couldn't handle it at that time so I kept sleeping for another 30 mins or so. I woke up feeling perfectly fine, ate my cold KFC meal and went out to play football. Then went out for a night of impressing the ladies with my dance moves and gymnasts physique.

We then went back to our room, videotaped the naked fat man in the block opposite lying on his bed, posing, in full view of passers by. Played a world cup on Pro evo soccer (I always win as Poland). And then slept.

Over the course of that day, according to my friends (and videotape evidence) I drank one complete bottle of Smirnoff (black) vodka between 12 and 2 pm and that night I drank approximately 10 double measure vodkas (50 ml) and no hangover. God bless those crazy Russians.

I don't drink anymore. It has lost what little appeal it had. I'd rather stay sober when I go on a night out because my best features (wit, charm and devastating good looks) are only dulled by alcohol.

At an outside party in Germany in 1998 I drank a large mix of rum, tequila, and beer. It was mainly Tomek and myself that kept passing the rum and tequila bottles back and forth. Afterward, we smoked weed and I was messed up. Bad!

It was one of the dumbest things I have ever done in my life, but was glad I had friends there to help me out. Never have done that since.

Just one thing: amphetamine and unbelievable amounts of alcohol = you still feel sober and can drink on and on and on...

But I guess my record for "normal" drinking would be a whole case of Beck's beer (24 x 0.33l) plus several shots of vodka and Ramazotti at a friend's after-wedding-ceremony (only his buddies were invited) that lasted from 2000 til 0730 in the morning

When I went on holiday to sunny Spain I bought a 4 litre bottle of vodka. It even had a pump attachment to put on the top. That was halved at one party and I was the only vodka drinker there apart from my girlfriend at the time, but she drank in one night what I had in a glass.

P.S. I used to drink vodka and coke out of a pint glass. Half and half.

Yeah, vodka and coke just tastes like coke. The thing is, it never really affected me. I never had any memory loss, I never lost control of myself, I only threw up once, and I attribute that to eating a burger king meal. In fact I was usually the most sober person around. If you drink enough you begin to sober up whilst still drinking.

Too many nights to mention, and too much drink to recall correctly. I believe one of my crowning glories was something along the lines of this:

Pre-night warmup:

4 cans of Skol - weakish British lager
Couple of cans of Strongbow - 5% cider
Half bottle of red wine
One glass of Smirnoff Norsk Vodka and lemonade.

Night out:

7 pints of snakebite - a dash of blackcurrant cordial, half pint of 5% Carling lager, and filled up with Strongbow cider. Very tasty.
2 shots of Aftershock Black
3 double vodka and Red Bulls.

Return home:

Another glass of Smirnoff Norsk.
About a quarter of an onion. (It looked nice at the time)

I remember being "escorted" off someones premises for "unlawful entry", getting me arse out in the taxi and mooning the car behind, and falling into a coma on the sofa, waking up at 10am the following day and crapping myself as I didn't know where I was. My body and brain had naturally assumed I had gone to bed, waking up on the sofa kind of scared me a bit.

Would I do it again? Yes. The following week, actually.

Holiday earlier this year with my mates, The first night out.

Started with 2 half a Litre pint's of stella at some dodgy pirates bar that we got dragged to by them advertising people, they promised us a free shirt.

The effects kicked in when I robbed the pirates hat outside.

http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/3188/pira4gv.jpg

Off we wen't to a nice bar that had pool tables and karaoke (Yes we where the British wankers that got up and sang all the football songs)

The Jack Daniels and coke was getting abused by me in that bar, and for every triple Jack Daniels I bought, they gave you a free shot. I had about 4.

Then I was pissed to the point of no control, I got dragged too some bar where I bought a huge cocktail for 18 euros! Let's just say that was the icing on the cake. I was then a walking time bomb, once that cocktail kicked in on top of everything else I was a gonna spew it. We then wen't to a bar with really good music and girls, got this picture taken (Don't remember them taking it btw)

http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/3042/pira6cr.jpg
Me middle left

The pints and shots where getting thrown down me by this point, and i don't remember how many I had then.

On the way to another bar, I was basicly falling over everywhere, and my head was spinning like hell. So while they wen't off for something to eat after we left the bar, I went back to the hotel room for bed.

Without a doubt the most I have ever drank, was still pissed the next day.

EDIT: I let it all out in the toilet the next morning.

In one session, (around 6 hours) drank 14 pints of Kilkenny.

when working on the mines in Mount Isa, on the weekends i would regularly drink in one afternoon a bottle of Jim Beam Gold (50% 100 proof) and a bottle of Jim Beam Black. Well to you bunch of hard drinking guys, this may not seem that much.

4 bulmers
2-3 coke and vodka's
few shots of vodka (bout 3)
1-2 cans of some crappy beer

All within an hour and a half. Yeah I know its not Jack Daniels but it was fun!!

Here in Saudi Arabia. We make our own brew. We ferment brown sugar for a couple of weeks to a month. Then distill it with improvised pressure cooker and coils. Then we test it by how fast it burns. The faster the better.

So it doesnt matter how many you drink. Drink a quart of this sh!t and you'll black out. I did a couple of times.

New years eve a couple of years back. I consumed the better part of a bottle of Absolut Vodka (I got mad when I saw that someone had "borrowed" the last drops - like I needed it:roll: ), a bottle of bubbly wine and a couple (4-5) of beers. I threw up while I was talking to this girl and my only memory of how I got home was when I was crawling around in the mud in a ditch which I had fell into...what amazes me is that I volounteered to clean up the place (student dorm) even though my hangover was of epic proportions.

However, we didn't find my vomit because I couldn't remember where I was the time I threw up and figured someone had cleaned it up. A couple of weeks later someone complained to my buddy (who lived in the dorm) about old vomit and he had to clean it up...

It was in Russia when me and American friends went there in 2003. We had a full day with a brigade of SPN. We shot their weapons, filmed some cool **** together, and than the drinking started.

There was 5 of us (the honorable guests), and the brigade of Spetsnaz between 15-20.
We first bought a case of vodka which was 20 bottles(i forget the name, like many other things from that night), and a case of beer dark long big 20 bottles.

After we shot all their guns and ammo, and had a friendly sparring we began our warm up with a 2 liter bottles of red wine. We were thirsty, and there were no soft drinks. So the Spetsnaz guys pull out some red wine. Thats water to them.

The table was ready, and it was outside too, so the blood was rushing good.

Our first man gets the honors of first shot. We didnt have shot glasses either. So the Spetsnaz guys bust out their

http://www.therupturedduck.com/WebPages/Fieldgear/images/F-222a-b.JPG

The thing on the right

They open the first bottle and pour it all in there. However there was still space left so they open another and pour half to fill it all the way. Than they pass the mess kit to our first friend, and ask him in Russian to have the honors. I was busy translating other things to my other 3 American friends, so I totally lost the attention to this first shot.

My friend, never gotten that translation of (take a gulp and pass the kit) from me, just drinked it all. Six fukin gulps it took him, yes 6 gulps. Thats a bottle and half of vodka.

The Russians were standing there staring at him with a confused look for good 20 seconds, but than with cheers passed him a beer to chase it. He almost died that night, Spetsnaz medic had to give him an adrenaline shot in the thigh.

I had a full bottle of vodka, between 8-10 beers, and we had to go to the store to get another case. Last thing i remember is taking another shot that was half the mess kit.

NEVER AGAIN

yeah but it doesn't tell you what you had on a particular night.

I find it quite easy, I can remember little details, like drinks I had, peoples names, and music in the club etc but ask me what route the taxi took home, what pubs and clubs I went to, and I'll just draw a blank. More disturbingly, I can never ever remember how much money I spent, I have to go and check my bank account to guesstimate how much was in at the start, and get the total from that.

Roman is the man, and his friend is inhuman.woot
I have a funny story frm Israel.
On the last day of my birthright trip (Yea, jews get a free 10 day trip, and what!) I decided to mark my trip there with my crew
It helped that the bartender was also from my hometown from dnepropetrovsk, so all teh shots i got were double shots. I started with 2 doubleshots of finalandia. THen came rum and coke, Jack Daniels and coke, 2 beers, some more shots of vdka, tequila shot, rum and coke and some other **** i dont remmeber.....my memory restarted the next morning with a GIANT turd analy raping ym ass in the bathroom. From Various accounts, i started by screaming russian obscenities at (russian speaking) soldoers who were there. WE got to our room, i lost control of my legs, and started crawling like an injured retard. Making weird sounds and cursing in russian, pouking everywhere, and wilding out after an hour my firend becasme worried, and tehy told the army medics to come in, 4 of em came in (3 of em russian speaking) held me down, and as I was tellign them that ima **** their moms in russian, they talked **** about me 'being a little bitch who cants hold is liquor in russian" . LMAO
I ended up breaking a shower at the hotel, and the director wanted to charge me 200 bucks, i gave him my debit card but it was never charged, hehe. THe next day i had a ridiculous headache, thankfully people on my trip were nice and were giving me all their advils and cigarettes....
My friends spen thte whole nigh tmaking sure i was ok, but they got theuir reward, to this day everytime we meet a new person after 5 mins of convo thye hear about what i did. hehe.

THats me being in a really ****ed up sate, medics came within a minute of this pic.

My firends are trying to persuade me to go lie in a cold shower, at the time it doesnt seem like I was in agreement.

omg roman, i didnt even thing it was possible for someone to consume that much. but damn, i bet drinking with spetznaz guys was fun.

The most drunk I ever got was at a reenactment. It happened to fall on Burns night and half of our mixed commonwealth unit do Blackwatch, both imperial and canadian. So i drank God knows how much, ate haggis and barely stumbled back to my barracks in the middle of a blizzard. When i got back, I hopped in the wrong bed (boy was that guy pissed, but luckily he didnt know it was me. I had a laugh hearing him complain the next day) Then I get my uniform halfway off and have to vomit. I dont know if anyone has ever tried running on tile in hobnails with your pants around your ankles, but its an experience unto itself...

I make it down there and almost pass out with my head in the toilet. Thankfully there was some RHC guys down there as well, and they made sure i didnt drown...

The next morning my head was killing me and i could berely speak. I dont think i have or ever will get that drunk again. That night taught me to pace myself.

"Hunch Punch." A UGA classic. It's usually Kool-Aid mix or Fruit Punch mixed with any sort of clear alcohol, i.e. Everclear, Vodka, Goldschlager... Sometimes people cut up fruit and throw it in, and you eat that.

You have to be very careful, it will absorb into your system very quickly, due to the sugar. You'll be fine for a while, and then BOOM! But you already knew that...
