Clark Predicts a Win in Virginia or Tennessee

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (*******) - Presidential hopeful Wesley Clark on Sunday predicted he would win at least one Democratic primary this week, but indicated he would continue his quest for the White House if he falls short of that goal.

"I expect to win at least one" of Tuesday's primaries, Clark told CNN's "Late Edition."

The retired U.S. Army general has blanketed the state of Tennessee ahead of Tuesday's Democratic primary, hoping to score his second victory on the heels of his narrow win in Oklahoma last week.

Clark visited three Memphis churches on Sunday before a campaign side trip to Wisconsin.

Virginia Democrats also will vote on Tuesday for a presidential candidate.

Recent independent polls in both states show Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry ahead, with Clark and North Carolina Sen. John Edwards competing for second place.

But Clark, seeking public office for the first time, claimed a "swelling of support" that has brought in $700,000 in campaign contributions since the Oklahoma victory.

Asked whether he would quit the race if he fares poorly on Tuesday, Clark said he expects to be in the "Super Tuesday" elections on March 2, when 10 states vote for Democratic candidates who wish to challenge President Bush in November.

Clark, the former NATO commander, professed no interest in being the Democratic vice presidential candidate if he fails to win his party's nomination for president.

"I don't have any intention of being vice president. ... I'm running to be president and that's the only thing I'm considering," he said.

With Kerry running ahead of his five Democratic opponents nationwide, there has been speculation that if he wins the party's nomination, he would select a Southerner as his running mate. Both Clark and Edwards are from the South.

Clark was asked about a Washington Post report suggesting that when he was NATO commander in charge of the bombing campaign over Kosovo in 1999, domestic political considerations played a role in conducting the air war.

"There was never any pressure from the White House. ... President (Bill) Clinton and (national security adviser) Sandy Berger wanted nothing but success," Clark said when asked whether the aim was to wrap up the NATO bombings before then-Vice President Al Gore's 2000 presidential campaign heated up.

I like Clark and Edwards in the Democratic primaries.
