looks like their using the old Lee Enfield No4 rifle (.303). We used those in the Army cadets when I was a kid... replaced with the SA80 in late 80s (I think)....

As for the temperatures, Norway is as bad off as Canada. And don't forget the russkies..
The G3 has worked well for us for the last 30 orso years. And the AK's work like a charm, i hear..
Shouldn't be any reason for you guys to use bolt-actions?

Sure there is a reason. The rangers a native group and keep the weapons at house and use them for hunting, the Canadian Government would never given them a anythging better for that. keeping a FN-C1 at house... to the liberal anti military/gun government... nevre going to happen.

NO I mean the Liberal party of canada. They are totally anti-gun and very much anti military. Harper is no more a nazi than Tony Blair, or any other conservative leader. I think have been watching too TV on the CBC and its rotting your brain to real problems of Canada.

Tony Blair is the leader of a Conservative Party?

Get your facts straight and you might be taken more seriously.

In regards to why they carry old bolt action weapeons. First off the point made that they have these weapons at home, and use them for hunting and alike, is a main reason why the rangers arent issued other weapons. It is also important to remember that the Rangers are a sort of para-military organization. They dont undergo training like the remainder of the force does, for instance there is no basic, or trade training.

The rangers grew out of the neccessity for canada to "prove" its soveriegnty over the arctic realm. During the 20's and 30's there was alot of exploration going on in the north, and alot of whaling form fleets of other nations. canada began to panic and needed a way of showing its ownership over the land. Originally part of the RCMP's mandate was to show that canada controlled these lands. But, there just werent enough RC's around. The Military wasnt capable of handling these duties either.

So, at some point (i dont know the dates) the Ranger idea came about. This served a few important roles. Number one, it further integrated the Inuit into canada, something that had been neglected until post world war two. Second, it gave the inuit the ability to make an extra wage in a poverty strickened area, and gave them access to rifles they could use for hunting. Third, it finally gave the canadian government an organization primarily formed to show our sovereignty over the northern lands. As the rangers grew ranger groups were placed in other isolated communities, to help display the maple leaf, and to help keep watch over our territory. Canada is emmensly big, and without this para-military group keeping watch over the entire coast line to prevent invasion would be nearly impossible.

As time has gone on the Rangers mandate has been added to. Amongst the most important Sovereignty patrols, the rangers now also act as SARS, and other roles.

Cheers,
Paul

"Tony Blair is the leader of a Conservative Party?

Buddy, Tony Blair might lead the Labour party but for a Labour leader he is very conservative and kept many of the same old polices of Major government. Which in case you didn't know is conservative. If you want I can list the conservative polices Blair kept in place. compare him to other Labour leaders... its conservative. And my comment was about conservative leaders not parties.

You might want to chill the heck out a bit before you get to A'stan man. The entire concept of ops is a hearts and minds operation. You need to real calm and respectful around these folks......besides who gives a sh!t what some 14 year old arm-chair general has to say on a public forum?

This very special unit maintains a permanent military presence in the arctic regions of North/Northeast Greenland. It's origins can be traced back to the WWII experience with "Operation Resolute", where a guerilla-force of hunters tracked and eliminated German meteorological stations. These stations would have provided vital weather forecasts to the German air force and navy.
In its present form, Sirius is based on small two man patrols with a dog sledge and 11 dogs. The service time is 25 months without any leave and the only outside contact, besides by radio, is the annual supply ship. The main patrolling activity is carried out in the 4 month winter period, where wind speeds of 100 knots or temperatures below -40 can occur. Under these conditions, the patrols must cover several thousand kilometers to complete their designated routes. This objective can only be achieved by using dogsleds, as snowmobiles would be noisy, require vast amounts of fuel, break down and be unable to warn against polar bears. Ultimately: You can't eat a snowmobile in a survival situation!
The weapons carried also reflect the harsh conditions. Only bolt-action rifles (M17/M53) performs reliably. The standard SIG210 Neuhausen sidearm was recently replaced by the 10mm Glock 20, as the stopping power of multiple 9mm rounds proved to be insufficient against a polar bear. The members are recruited from the regular services and must be sergeants at least. They may not be married or otherwise engaged and the selection procedure stresses the psychological evaluation of their personality. Of course, they must also achieve top marks at the NATO Arctic Warfare School in Norway.

Dude, I was clearly joking around , I can see your excited about collecting "scalps" in A-stan and all, but you need to relax a little. You should try huffing some glue or drinking "white-mans firewater" to help you chill out...works for me!
