CAIRO (*******) - A pan-Arab newspaper said Sunday that the al Qaeda organization led by Osama bin Laden bought tactical nuclear weapons from Ukraine in 1998 and is storing them in safe places for possible use.
There was no independent corroboration of the report, which appeared in the newspaper al-Hayat under an Islamabad dateline and cited sources close to al Qaeda, which the United States blames for the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The newspaper said al Qaeda bought the weapons in suitcases in a deal arranged when Ukrainian scientists visited the Afghan city of Kandahar in 1998. The city was then a stronghold of the Taliban movement, which was allied with al Qaeda.

Al Qaeda would use the weapons only inside the United States or if the group faced a "crushing blow" which threatened its existence, such as the use of nuclear or chemical weapons against its fighters, the paper quoted its sources as saying.

Ukraine inherited nuclear weapons from the Soviet Union but in 1994 it agreed to send 1,900 nuclear warheads to Russia and sign up to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

After the Soviet Union broke up in 1991, a former Russian National Security Adviser, Alexander Lebed, said that up to 100 portable suitcase-sized bombs were unaccounted for. Moscow has denied such weapons existed.

Lebed said each one was equivalent to 1,000 tons of TNT and could kill as many as 100,000 people.

Al-Hayat did not say how many weapons al Qaeda bought or say who exactly had provided them.

A Pakistani government official said Secretary of State Colin Powell was expected to visit Islamabad soon to discuss nuclear proliferation, after a top scientist there admitted passing atomic program secrets to third parties.

The United States has repeatedly said its worst fear is that a group like al Qaeda might obtain access to weapons of mass destruction and use them against the American people.

well, it has always been 'known' that there exists briefcase nukes from the former soviet union. it has always been known that al qaeda wants WMD. i'm somewhat doubtful of the connection, though.

it is quite possible, though, but i would expect these weapons to be used in Chechnya. :(

Would it be as reliable as this FOX News guy with his story about Iraqi WMD's leaving in convoys to go to Iran/Syria?

Would it be as credible as the 45 min launch claim used by the Labour Government to justify war in Iraq?

Given that by todays standards intel has been getting a rough ride,I guess it would be wise to consider it a distinct possibility!!

If you mens, Chechens could use nukes in Chechnya,it will be stupid. Why they should use it in own country.Do you know how small is Chechnya? If terrorist have nukes they could used it in western countries or in russia. But i doubt it, because it radioactive, and many countries, like Poland have scanners(or detectors)on borders. And its immposible to get it to this countries.well, i dont belive that. They no have nukes, if they have they will used it.

the missing soviet briefcase nukes are probably like the missing four tonner in the falklands and the US armys missing helicopters down to a paperwork.
though i belive tane angel may have a little bird in his back garden
if al qaeda had nukes they'd have used them by now they have no reason to hang on to them. Mind you they may have some "suitcase nukes" the russian mafia has made quite a lot of money selling weapons grade material that usually turns out to be radioactive junk

What makes you so sure this is not a possiblity?

This assertion did not begin at Fox News but with the Kay Report.

WMD in Syria: Kay

Ex-inspector says Iraq sent 'lot of material'

By AP

LONDON -- David Kay, who recently resigned as leader of a U.S. weapons search team in Iraq, said part of captive president Saddam Hussein's weapons program was hidden in Syria, a report in Britain's Sunday Telegraph newspaper said today. Kay was reported to have said he had uncovered evidence unspecified materials were moved to Syria shortly before last year's U.S. invasion of Iraq.

Most likely city to fall victim of such a weapon right now would be Moscow.

I think that this is definately a threat to world peace and security. However, i think right now if Al Queda had such weapons, they would be used in Russia or Europe, because the chances of getting one into the US and keeping it long enough to fire it off are slim. There are active efforts by DOE and DHS teams to find ANY nuclear materials in the major cities...basically a team drives around a city in a van all day looking for radiation- and believe me, they have found some radioactive materials.

Does the Ukraine even have nukes?

Not anymore they dont..

And they never 'operated' any..

They just had some Soviet weapons stored / based there..
