View Full Version : Veterans Banned from D-Day Tributes !!!!

Exclusive By Rupert Hamer
BRITISH war veterans are to be banned from this year's Normandy D-Day landings 60th anniversary tribute - because the French claim they could damage the beaches.
Elderly ex-soldiers have been told numbers are going to be limited because of "health and safety issues", including possible harm to the environment and problems with disabled access and public toilets. The snub has enraged up to 3,000 veterans preparing to make the emotional trip to the beaches where they fought the Germans to help liberate France in 1944.
Tory home security spokesman Patrick Mercer, a former army colonel, said: "It's a good job that the French didn't restrict which beaches our men could go on in 1944 because if they had then the French would still be under Nazi rule." Mr Mercer, whose father fought in World War II, added: "If our boys had been worried about such things as health and safety during D-Day, then France would never have been liberated. Some recognition of this from the French would be nice."
Veterans have been further angered by the insistence that they are only allowed access to the beaches if they wear security passes and photo ID cards. Survivors without a badge will be denied entry to events, the beaches they liberated and even a British march-past due to be attended by the Queen.
Now officials from the Ministry of Defence have begun their own war of words in a desperate attempt to get the French to change their minds.
Last night a senior MoD insider said: "The French have gone too far and this will be made clear to them. Many veterans are becoming distressed. To be treated like this on the very beaches they liberated is insulting."
Veterans from across Britain have spent months preparing for the emotional pilgrimage to the beaches. Because of their age, for many the trip to Northern France could be the last time they stand on the former battlefields to remember fallen comrades.
They will find out this week how the French have limited numbers and how many places are available.
The event is also dogged by fears of a possible terrorist strike, as the commemorations will be attended by Tony Blair, French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.
The source said: "The French are asking for frail and elderly veterans to sort out individual security passes for themselves - that is enough to put off old soldiers in their droves.
"And the number allowed at some events and areas of the beaches is going to be restricted for what the French describe as health and safety reasons.
"The feeling in the MoD is that what is being asked of these men by the French is too much and they should be shown a great deal more respect."
Last night an MoD spokesman said there would be discussions with the French to address the issue of security passes and other restrictions. The talks will will take place in the city of Caen - which was bombed flat by the British as they advanced in 1944.
Joe Sibun, 84, who landed on Gold Beach in Normandy on D-Day, said: "I think it is just a case of somebody sitting in an office in France who has decided to be bloody awkward.
"I do not see any good reason for this kind of red tape."

Slogans reading "Death to Yankees" and "Rosbeefs (Brits) go home" were painted on the central memorial in Etaples, near the Channel port of Boulogne in northern France.
The slogans also called for UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and US President George W Bush to be sent to the international criminal court in The Hague.
"Saddam Hussein will win and spill your blood", one slogan read.
Another claimed the graves were "contaminating" French soil.
Isn't the next logical step for the French government is to denigrate the surviving war heros?

Was the French Vandalism of Allied War Dead an Isolated Incident?
Unfortunately not. It happened again in December 2003.
The graves of 10 British soldiers killed during World War I were vandalised last weekend in a military cemetery near this northern French town, police said.
Their tombstones were broken or pulled out of the ground and some were stolen, police said.
The site, the Hibers Trench cemetery, is managed by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and holds the remains of 133 British and three Canadians soldiers, most of them killed during a German offensive in the area in April 1917.
Police said they had taken shoe prints from near the desecrated graves and were looking for the perpertrators.

Third Incident: French Ghouls Attack War Graves
Vandals have kicked over 45 headstones at a military cemetery in France for British soldiers, confirms the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
Two headstones were completely destroyed at the Saint Aubert Cemetery, near the northern town of Cambrai, the First World War I burial site of 435 soldiers, most of them British.
Workers are currently repairing the damage.
The headstones are believed to have been kicked over on Sunday evening, but police are still investigating, according to Peter Francis, spokesman for the War Graves Commission.

Even the Poles found room in thier hearts to save the French when thier own country was over run. The fought beside the Canadians from Normady to VE Day.
Dont worry guys. Pretty soon France will be an Islamic Republic anyway and all those cheese eating surrender monkeys will be trying to move to your country. Just dont let 'em in. Im sure communist North Korea would love to have them but I think the koreans require people to work more than 6 months out of the year and I dont think the French would like that very much. Also the Koreans tend to convert efficiency into more porduction (at least by French standards) instead of converting it into more vacation time (which the French are absolute masters of) which would also anger the French..........
I gotta say, the French sure do know how to live it up.... They lay down in bed with dictators and Hitlerians, then when nations and peoples brave enough to take the bastards on come along, the French cry foul with "national sovereignty" and "its all about oil". Well, yea it is all about oil and money: Saddams cheap oil to France and his weapons payments. I wonder how many Iraqi's were killed by French weapons and French funded weapons over the last 10 years??? More than were killed by American and coalition weapons during the first UN sanctioned war or the US invasion: probably not but at least those deaths meant something more than a few bucks in a cheese eating wine swilling Frenchmans wallet so he could send agents to kill Taiwanese protesting the sale of overpriced French warships when there were superior US ones available for an equal price!!!!! Again even the French investigated that one, mostly after about 9 agents ended up dead after "falling from thier balcony railings" by accident (all of whom were involved in the Taiwanese naval scandals).
Kinda makes you wonder why the one thing the French government has been kinda quite on over the last decade was the embargo which was killing a great number of Iraqi's. Go figure when the French were involved in illegal arms and oil sales. Even the French did an investigation on French high tech missiles which had not been exported and were manufactered in France just before the war started being found in Iraqi weapons caches.

Is Racist hatred linking to articles about French vandalizing war graves?
Or did you mean French Racial Hatred?
Marshal Philippe Pétain's collaborationist Vichy government, in alliance with the Nazis, deported between 61,000 and 80,000 French citizen Jews to the extermination camps.
The first anti-Jewish legislation introduced by the Vichy government had been proposed by the French, not demanded by the Germans.
The Vichy government and its many supporters were responsible for a "National Revolution" which was intended to reassert a traditional vision of France which questioned or even rejected the participation of Jews as equal citizens.

yeah the French are really good at putting the "race label" on things that dont really qualify as race: A good example would be qaulifying the Jewish religion as a "race" and then collaboratting with the Nazi's to wipe them off the face of ther earth. OF course there was this one French town that worked realy hardot save "thier Jews" and so I guess the Frensh really didnt mistreat the Jews, seeing as how that one town did a good thing and stood up for what was right and moral......... rofl

This is gross. I used to give the french the benefit of the doubt- just say they are ignorant to the threat posed by terrorism and rogue nations, and ignorant to the deeds we for them decades back. But now i can say bluntly, that the french are arrogant, rude, disrespectful and we should treat them the same.
It hurts me to know that my grandfather put his life on the line to help save these people, and many of his comrades didnt make it home, only for them to come back and disrespect him and the men that served with him 60 years later.

Now they open their eyes but it's too late! They so much said that french who are affraid by massive muslims immigration are stupid or facists that now it's time to smile!
For the spannish guy: what country was under muslims laws several century when France's won againts them!?
For those who speak about terrorism: Who was the country where Bomb explosed in subway in the 80's and 90's????? Who was the country who fight against islamists terrorists when terrorists speaks in London , when CIA helped Islamists in Afghanistan? Who is the country who is a close friend to Saudi the country who send money to extremists in Europe or Pakistan?
Pauvres baltringues!

Sorry to steal again this football thread.
How wonderfull. Just quote a frickin tabloid (which accidentaly belongs to Rupert Murdock, THE top french basher), and let all the hatred flow... And then the same people are going to whine about how french and european in general like to bash the US
For those who still care, here's how the BBC presents the facts (oh wait, maybe that doesn't count, since sunday mirror is Waaaaaaaay more unbiased than the BBC :slap: )
Veterans may need D-Day passes
War veterans wishing to mark the 60th anniversary of D-Day in France this year have been told they may need passes because of security concerns.
Thousands of ex-servicemen and women are expected to attend the event to mark the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings in June 1944.
But the authorities in France have said veterans without correct identification will not be allowed to take part.
A meeting is due to be held next week to discuss the issue.
Tim Lerwill, of the British Embassy, said many people would be disappointed if the perceived threat of terrorism prevented them attending what is to be the final D-Day commemoration.
He said: "I think it's a great shame.
"I think that the upswell of interest has perhaps caught a lot of people on the hop on both sides of the Channel.
"There are a lot of people who may well not have been to the 50th anniversary who suddenly realise this is to be the last official commemoration of the event and wish to be there."
D-Day veteran Reg Hill, from Birchington, near Margate in Kent, is one of those who hopes to travel to France in June.
'Dragging their feet'
He said the British government was not doing enough to help its veterans meet the requirements for photo identification.
He said: "The French government have put thousands of pounds into it but our government are still dragging their feet.
"They couldn't care less as long as we got rid of Hitler when we did."
Allied forces, many of whom sailed from Kent and Sussex, landed on the Normandy coast before liberating France from German occupation during World War II.
Several heads of state, including British Prime Minister Tony Blair, German Chancellor Gerhard Shroeder and US President George Bush, have been invited to the ceremonies in June.

Lottery to fund 'Heroes Return'
A Lottery-funded scheme will help to pay for Second World War veterans to visit the battlefields where they served.
The 'Heroes Return' scheme will allow UK veterans to commemorate the battles they fought and the comrades they lost 60 years ago by travelling to areas including Europe, North Africa and the Far East.
The New Opportunities Fund and the Confederation of British Service and Ex-Service Organisations announced the funding programme at the Cabinet War Rooms in London today.
Lottery funding will also be available for spouses and carers to accompany veterans on their trips, which can be made at any time this year or in 2005. War widows and widowers will also qualify for funding.
The money will help veterans to record their experiences on the visits so that younger generations can learn from them.
Launching the scheme today, Lottery Minister Estelle Morris said:
"We all owe the men and women who fought in World War II a great deal. I am very pleased that money has been made available by the New Opportunities Fund to make it possible for them to once again pay their respects to their former colleagues."
Heroes Return is the centrepiece of the New Opportunities Fund's Veterans Reunited programme, through which National Lottery money is enabling veterans and young people to mark the courage and sacrifice of Britain's wartime generation. The programme will involve those who served at home and overseas, and ensure that new generations can learn from their experiences.
The government announced last June that veterans and their spouses wishing to travel to France for the D-Day landings anniversary will receive free passports.

raid don't get caught up in this for the wrong reasons. Kicking the BBC when it's don't does fvck all to do with this issue. I hope for you're sake you are an gullible brit rather than an american claiming to know more about british media then we do. Comparing the mirror and the BBC is just bollocks. I happen to think that the french government is being completely stupid and I can't begin to understand why, however those who are just using this to bash France are just being ****heads.
American habits...?
don't say that buddy. Most of our american brothers know how to think for themselves, just like most of french people.
This just sounds like another easy witch hunt led by a vocal minority feeded by biased toilet paper tabloids...
About the graves, if you look at the first post about that event from last year, you'll see that I was, and still am, totally disgusted by that thing. Same goes for the facts reported this time, although I got to admit that's the first time I hear about them. But don't judge a whole nation on the basis of two or three people's act. And don't blame the govt for that. Disagree all the way with their stance on Iraq case, that's just fine. But don't mix up political things with isolated crimes (nevertheless, I'd still love to see the bastards who did this die in pain)

but isn't that exactly what seemingly everyone else is doing to the French on this site?

Hit the nail on the head there well said.

Nhaa, I don't think so. That's why I used the term vocal minority. The jokes/insults/bashing always come from the same people.
I think most of the forum users have learned to wait a bit before making flaming statements, and know at least to separate truth from fiction.
They just won't make a statement here, because it's pretty much useless (who said food for trolls?).
That being said, I'd be the first to be pretty upset if half of what was said in the Mirror was true, but somehow, I have a hard time believing that piece of crap. My grandfather fought the nazis, was arrested and deported to germany, and managed to escape from there all the way back to paris under a train, so if he was still among us nowadays, I'd be really mad if he couldn't attend the commemorations.
Yes, the flamers are the same every time. Saying exactly the same things, over the same threads, with the same sentences, the same words, with their short knowledge of life and history coming from the same sources. Quite funny to talk to them in the beginning, but in the beginning only...
But as you says, (thanks God!!!) they're a minority.
