View Full Version : Militaryphotos.net Desert Shoot

Good afternoon, guys!
Myself and a few other members are going out shooting in the Mojave desert this Thanksgiving weekend. I was wondering if anyone else in the Southern California area is interested in the shoot? We can turn this into an official Militaryphotos.net shoot!
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y222/TacoDelRio/BrassRainbow.jpg
Date: November 26-27, 2005
Also up for consideration, possible winter training in similar areas around the mid-to-late December time frame. Now, I'm not calling it training to say I'm any fancy firearms instructor who can teach m3gaf0rce tactics, but it's basically camping with guns, fun, discipline, and an attitude towards preparedness for "emergency social situations". Safety is the #1 priority.
Training consists of:
-Patrolling
-Live fire
-Force-on-force using airsoft, if interested
-Individual movement in near-arctic conditions, if weather permits!
-Fieldcraft
-Shooting at objects provided by the participants
-Being cold
-Staying safe
-Having a good time!

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y222/TacoDelRio/CampSmall.jpg
(Pictures from last year's training)
I've been doing this for a few years now, and thought it might be a good idea to ask if others were interested. I trust people are mature enough to respond in a mature manner!!!
If anyone would like to participate, and would like more details, feel free to PM me.
-Ryan
MODS: I copied this post from the General Discussion section into the Gear section, as I believe this will get more traffic and attention. If you have concern over the use of the site's name, or any other issue, I'd be happy to comply!

Probably.
I've got some E-targets, 50 meter popups, and 300 meter (IE not 50 meter) popups, without the popup thingy of course. Plus, I've got a few hard cardboard sillhouette targets.

I'll bring my sleeping bag just in case - I'm lacking in camping gear department so I'll probably sleep in the car... Will you be cooking breakfast in the morning? :D
I'm going to bring a dozen or so larger Mailing Boxes to fill with sand (seem to last a while), whatever decent size mufflers the local shop is throwing away, water jugs... Sand filled ammo canisters serve a fine target purpose once they are emptied out as well.

Breakfast depends on local laws (hah) and whether any critters stray too close. If so, I usually use a heavy dose of good old Tapatio sauce, and some Cajun spices I usually keep in my gear. I pretty much only go for rabbit now, as I had sparrow last time, and there wasn't enough meat on that sumbitch to cook.
BTW, you could make a neat little BBQ with those thrashed ammo cans!

Can we bring our other evil toys?

A person moving into this state, otherwise in lawful possession of an "assault weapon," shall do one of the following: Prior to bringing the "assault weapon" into the state, that person shall first obtain a permit from the Department of Justice, or the person shall cause the "assault weapon" to be delivered to a licensed gun dealer who shall redeliver that "assault weapon" to the person if that person obtains a permit from the Department of Justice.
Sorry about our State, bud :( I know you can transport your weapons through the State but that's only if you are passing through

Whoops, disregard the PM. Kinda answers this question. Still read it though, got an extra Q.
Roman: If you do go, bring whatever the hell you want. I'd personally just do what you said though. I've never seen opposition out where we go now, but still, a felony is a bit "permanent"!
-I am the lead vehicle, so don't worry too much about "directions", other than the 2 steps to getting back! Basically go down the 395, hit the 15, and head back into LA when we're done!

When I first met Durandal, I thought he could be a homo-cidal maniac(JK) and thought it best we meet in a public place, like the gun show. Turned out ok, then met a few other members and it's all good. For some reason so far, the online gun nuts seem to be pretty level headed.

Where is this place in relation to Tehachapi?
Open public spots in Kern County are getting harder to find. I have a 50BMG that I want to stretch the legs on and only certain spots in the desert would permit me to get out to the 1500 yard and beyond mark.
On such short notice it's probably too late to get a case or two of Tannerite.

10-4, just wondering if this spot is a similar spot if not the same as another group of LA based folks goto that is north of Barstow when they do shooting/camping trips.
Like I said, I've been wanting to head to the desert to stretch the legs on my 50 but because of some strange regs I'm weary of where to go. Something about not being able to shoot south of the 58 and Barstow.
I have one or two spots west of Bakersfield where I have shot to 800-1k yards but I have yet to head to the desert.

It was a blast - thanks to everybody for attending! While we were not incredibly anal about safety rules - it was all within reasonable safety guidelines
Typical LA :) Yeah, my lawyer talked to your lawyer and they have cleared them for release - for use in Counterstrike Mods, your morning Coffee, BradyBunch Campaign leaflets and Save the Children Infomercials...
The sun was shining, the winds were gusty and the fine sand penetrated every nook and cranny - last night, I was swabbing sand out of the insides of my Mossy stock! Now, I had a camera but I was too busy shooting my guns and not my camera - the side effect of bringing too much ammo... Should have handed off the camera to my friend, whom was just window shopping for the good first hour... Oh well, here it goes - shoddy journalism shows how much fun I was having:

RomanS- we had an SKS vs Mini-14 competition and I'm pretty happy to report the Mini did great. Though I must say I had a lot of fun with that SKS, I shot a bit high with it at first but adjusted and it was mucho better.

^^ I was reffering to the mad Glock skills, not to mention the mad Guns Akimbo dash!
It was my first dual wielding experience, actually, the first time shooting my .40 with the weak hand... It was fun in the least and I did hit the very side of that ammo can on the last round! :D Yeah, I was pretty worthless!
I'm waiting for the video of us blowing that South African ammo can from like 10 yard range with at least 7-8 muzzles going at it... Most of it will be white powder and dust though :D
I'm considering better target materials for the next year shoot - as long as we get more time to set up and start the firing lane with wider lane of fire... Certainly looking towards doing this again in the new year!

Stuka has the Mossy. My Surefire fore-end is on my Remington 870, but they do offer one for the Mossberg.
The soda can was eliminated using 12ga 2 3/4in 000 buckshot (triple-ought).
I have cleaned my .308 so far. That's about it. I buried my Remington 870 in the sand, and it still works, albeit rougher. Haven't touched it yet!

I got a Mossberg - this is it, in its final configuration:
http://img468.imageshack.us/img468/3183/moss023ss.jpg
Heatshield is really rigged on but it holds and passes visual inspection at a glance :) It certainly serves its purpose though.
Here is a new hobby of mine - collecting spalled slugs. Here is the stuff I've collected this weekend:
Dynamit Nobel's Brennekke 2 3/4" 1oz slugs - extremely accurate, solid and well balanced projectiles - I had best accuracy results with them at the 75-100 yard range or so. I was hitting that barrel on top of the hill every single time with these. These are my favorites now, at an acceptable price - the balance reminds me that of a shuttlecocks.
http://img350.imageshack.us/img350/7231/brenneke018hz.jpg
http://img350.imageshack.us/img350/230/brenneke023uc.jpg
Left to Right: Box, Shell, unfired slug with attached shotcup, a shot slug barely deformed (can still read "Brennekke" on the nose) shot at long range and deformed slugs from the metal ammo can filled with sand (range of about 10 yards).
Dynamit Nobel's 3" "Gold" 1 3/8 oz slugs - these are for Rifled Bores only, but had average accuracy at long ranges

Unshot projectile with attached shotcup, the projectile cut in two, recovered slug from a sand box shot at about 25 yard range and the slug recovered from penetrating steel support of a car muffler (at another shoot).
S&B slug - 2 3/4"(?) 1oz. Accurate, similar performance to that of the Brennekke - but the slug isn't as well balanced... Recovered from a sand box, shot at 30 or so yard range - I've recovered only one but this one gave the most perfect mushroom... Yup, it's wider than a quarter.

Stuka: Nice slugs! I've got some 7.62x54 rounds from shooting into sand a few years ago.
