Operation Desert Storm was the codename of the first use of a weather machine in combat. Carried out in secrecy in 1982, the weather machine known as the SuperSoaker 3300000 was successfully launched from Idaho Launch Complex and deployed over Black Rock Desert, Nevada, with an objective to suppress what was thought at the time to have been an insurgent uprising known as the Burning Man Project. A total of 87 people drowned while another 60 were hospitilized, and 19 weather forcasters in Nevada and California lost their jobs as a result of the operation.

Even though the target actually turned out to be a disgruntled desert dweller (a "triple-D" or "DDD" in military terms) who happened to be on fire during CIA satellite surveillance of the area, the operation's effectiveness inspired much more military research in weather machine technology. However weather machines have not been used in any other combat situations to date. The operation was a significant topic for discussion in the most recent Geneva Convention.
