Iran was the greater danger at the time.
The US supported Saddam then, sort of like supporting Stalin when fighting against the Axis powers in WWII.
Such alliances are only temporary.

When one can have two enemies fight each other, then one always wins.

At the time Iraq was definately the lesser of the two evils- but im sure had we known Saddam would come back and bit our asses we woulda offed him then when we had the chance.

How was Iran before the revolution, with the Shah?

In my limited knowledge of the conflict, Saddam was concerned (among other things) about the rise of a rather extreme Shia Theocracy next door to Iraq. The majority of Iraq's population is Shia, while the ruling Baath regime paid lip service to being Sunni.

Iraqis got BEAT
The Iranians didn't win that war, it was a bloody stalemate that went no where
The shah of Iran was the the biggest US puppy in the region. Iran used to be like israel. They got whatever they wanted. After the revolution iran became an Islamic State, with a majority of shia.
The US did not like that. Saudi Arabia, kuwait and the rest of the arab countries (who are wahabis and hate shia muslims calling them infidels) also hated the new state.
Iraq was fuked up in the head so he invaded iran under whatever reason he came up with. He recieved aid from all arab countries neighbouring iran, and from the US.

Iran was a a threat to the whole middle east, and Iran had no right to storm our embassy in Tehran and take hostages.

From what I've seen, everyone lost, no one won. Not even the US. Have a good one, and just some thoughts...

Funny enough, that is true.. btw, USA did take part in that war, in shooting part too on Iraqs side, fighting against Iranian navy and 'commandos'.. sunk their speedboats and even couple of large surface warships.. at least one Iranian frigate was sunk and another badly damaged.

There was a lot of RealPolitik going on during the iran Iarq War- the Iran Contra weapons for hostages program, Israel giving the Iranians Aircraft spares and weapons. Russian giving both iran and Iraq weapons, north korea giving Iran weaponry. China giving both Arms. US support was mostly financial, compared to the French and Russia support- US support was financial- i.e organising the Arab states to a degree to pay Iraq Money and Oil tanker escort.
And yep Iranian Warhsip Vosper Class and Boghammers etc were sunk by USN and elements of TF160 in those days. Oh and then the USS Vincennes shooting down on an Airbus (NCTR STuff up) and the Exocet attack on USS Stark.
real Politik is real and alive- China supplies arms to Pakistan and Iran-opposes India etc yet Israel supplies arms to China and India and hates Pakistan and rest of Arab world. (Basic way of looking at it).
