hakia is building the Web's first "meaning-based" search engine, one that will bring answers and meaningful results to questions on any topic. To achieve this goal, hakia uses a proprietary semantic system instead of a conventional index. Meaning-based search will appeal to all Web searchers - especially those engaged in research on complicated subjects, such as medicine, law, finance, science, and literature. hakia engine is designed to evolve and improve its capabilities with each user interaction.

Yeah, usually only 10-year-olds make that grammar error. In spoken language and in some dialects its "hakia", but in written language it's spelled hakija (Finnish j is ****ounced like English y). My old teacher woud kill those Turks for that mistake.

And why the heck does their logo resemble Nokia's logo so much?

MAQ versus Indexing
hakia's designers broke from decades-old indexing method and built a much better system (called MAQ) to enable semantic analysis of Web pages, and "meaning-based" search. The information density in the MAQ system is significantly higher than that of a typical index table. The MAQ data resides on a distributed network of fast servers using a mosaic-like structure.

Ontological Semantics
hakia's proprietary method, which deploys full Ontological Semantics, gives the search engine human-like abilities to understand natural languages and detect meaning in text. hakia can bring a result like "Aspirin treats migraine" to the question "What drug treats headache?" entirely by meaning match without any word match. Depth and coverage of the meaning analysis will continuously increase in hakia from BETA operation onward.

Fuzzy Logic
Flexibility is a key requirement for any meaning-based search, because neither the world we live in nor the languages we speak are black-and-white. hakia deploys fuzzy logic (approximate reasoning) methods to allow flexibility so that the Ontological Semantics solution becomes feasible in a Web search application with stringent constraints.


Evolution of Knowledge
hakia's knowledge capacity evolves in time with each user interaction, so the intensity of Web page analyses increases each time a particular topic is questioned. Next time around, you are likely to get better results in topics you had searched at hakia.


Crawling and Content Coverage
Like any other search engine, hakia crawls the Internet 24 hours a day to analyze Web pages and to map them in its MAQ system. hakia is expected to cover the entire Web by early 2006.
