Close Combat III: The Russian Front (WWII real-time strategy. You can play as either side).
Aces Over Europe (very old WWII flight sim. You can play as USA, Britain, or Germany).
IL-2 Sturmovik (modern WWII flight sim. You can play as Germany or USSR).
Red Baron (very old WWI flight sim. You can fly for the RAF or the Luftwaffe).

I remember Red Baron and Aces over Europe. There are countless flight simulators which allow you to play as the Germans. Or there used to be when i was a little kid.

Nope; violent games were always 'censored' as far as I knew (at least for 10 years or so), so some games are totally forbidden, and other games have for example oil or green goo instead of blood... :|

I know that the Medal of Honor series is void of many things that have to do with Nazism and anti-German stuff in the game if you buy it in Germany.

**** off I'm european and no video game is banned here, there is also less of an outcry when violent films come out here. So there's no need to start boxing every one from one country let alone 300+ million in the EU
Nope, none. I suppose shooting Yanks, Limeys and Canucks running up the beaches wouldn't really make for a bestselller...

Well, maybe not in the UK, but I know that Return to Castle Wolfenstein was banned in Germany.

Yeah a lot of games here are either censored or banned, for example Wolfenstein 3d, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Half Life, Quake Series, Doom Series,SOF1/2, Postal 1/2..........well all FPS Games where you "kill" humans or human-like creatures.
We got all the fun stuff rainbow colored blood (red, blue hey even yellow) or we get our own robot grunts (Half Life and SOF2) rofl
but the laws were the same before and after the school shooting in Erfurt, they just tried to censor counter-shi....strike after it happend but didnt work.
Violence in germany is comparable to nudity in the us of a p-)

Half-Life is legal in germany.
And if you are 18 years old you can buy every game you want, expect games with nazi symbols.

I thought that Germans were the most open-minded people.
No Half-Life :petting:
They've got HL allright, it just has robots instead of humans... They still got most games, only with some 'changes'...anway, it still sucks. If I lived in Germany I would download all my games even if they were free in the stores...

You can play as both sides in all Close Combat games, that's I to V... CC2 is the best IMO.

Yeah, but is there any proper (read non-multiplayer) 1st person shooter like MOH? Obviously, you can't "win" in the end, but still a good story should be possible...

No, there isn't. Although I'm not involved in the whole game making process, I think the reasons for not doing such an FPS are rather obvious. In FPS you identify much more with the person you are playing, simply because it is a FP view. So if you play as a german soldier, your enemies are restricted to being either americans, brits, russians or every other little ally that took part in defeating nazi germany. Since these allies more or less make up half the world there is a certain fear that this game won't sell pretty good. Especially if I read the views and opinions of some people here, they might have a really hard time defending a bunker against "bad americans". I think the question of morality is also important here. Although you can lead germany to victory in certain other games, the FPS experience would bring that a lot closer and more personal, since it wouldn't have the "historical outline", but rather emphasize on the fun of shooting other people.
So, I don't think you'll see such a game in the near future.
It probably would be possible in a WW1 setting, but since there even is no decent WW1 FPS where you can play allied soldiers, don't hope for too much.

Get the "War of Infamy" total conversion mod for Ghost Recon. You choose whether you fight for America, Britain, or Germany. If you're fighting for USA or Britain, your enemies are Germans; if you're fighting for Germany, your enemies are Allied.

And gosh...I'm sure I'm not the only one who is wondering, but no one else has asked. Why do you want to play on the German side of WWII?

Why not? ;) Makes a pleasent change from always being on the allied side...
