Recently bought a M59/66 (Yugoslavian SKS variant), and there is a small paper tag hanging from the trigger guard. It reads:
PU - VARAZDINSKA
NEFORMACJISKO
with a small checkerboard shield.
Can anyone tell me what this means?

Varazdin is a croat town, and the checkboard shield is a croat mark.

I searched over here http://www.sksboards.com/forum/ but didn't find it.
If you are willing to register and ask, they may be able to help.

OK...
PU stands for "Policijska Uprava" which basically stands for main provintial police station. Varazdinska (****ounced varazhdinska) province is on NW of Croatia.
What it means is that it was probably illegaly owned and turned over to the police during the days of illegal guns amnesty law in Croatia - and later sold to you.
About NEFORMACIJSKO (I think you misspelled) I donno for sure, but if you really wanna know, I can ask.
Chekerboard is, like before mentioned, Croatian coat of arms.
BTW. lucky you, getting one of those. For your extra info, in ex-Yu area those are mass-known as "Papovka" which comes from its military designation PoluAutomatska Puska (semi automatic rifle).

Thanks to everyone for the help. These are really nice weapons, and seem quite sturdily built.
