I was just wondering if there were ever any projects to fit a 40mm grenade launcher to the SLR at any point during its service with the british and Australia defence forces.

I don't know any but the SLR's flash hider also works as a grenade launcher firing standard nato rifle grenades.

The Australian SASR fitted the XM148 to it during their time in South East Asia. They also fitted the XM148 to their chopped down HBAR guns that they used as a handy point weapon.

SASR used both models of the SLR in Vietnam. Most were L1A1's fitted with a 30rd mag and modified to fire full auto. A few were the L2A1 that had semi and automatic modes of fire. Barrels were also cut short, and flash suppressors removed, to move through the bush easier and also when fired, let off a huge muzzle flash and sounded really loud. Some of there weapons were fitted with the 40mm greande launchers during the conflict.
If you have a close look at some of the SASR pics from the War you can see both versions of the SLR.

:) The SLR with the bren mag was the way 7.62 ammo was expended, and the soldiers shooting it was heaven.
These belong to the Venezuelan National Guard Rural Comandos.
They seldom see use from what i've heard.

Note that this is the L4 Bren mag. The L4 Bren mag was designed to be common to both the L4 machine gun and the L1 rifle/L2 automatic rifle.

I see both of your pics of a SLR and raise you what appears to be a M16A1 with a M203 40mikemike on the soldier on the far left of BiZ's picture.

Yup, the Australians got a hold of both the Colt XM148 and the AAI XM203.

I'll gracefully accept Flankers 'raise' as that's a better pic than mine, but as for 'raising' me with my own pic? Not sure I'll cop that one on the chin. ;)

Interesting. The guy 2nd from the right appears to have a chopped barrel and the 1st guy on the left appears to have an M203 instead of the XM148.

The SASR were allowed to ct down barrels on their weapons. They would cut down the barrels of thier SLRs so when fired they would let off a huge flash and sound like a 50cal.
