Although Fidel Castro has been respectful towards the Jews, he has been generally hostile toward Israel. Originally Castro was very supportive of Israel, mostly due to sympathy he had for Jews as victims of facism and his identification of the State of Israel as a socialist country. As a result, Cuban foreign policy was generally sympathetic towards Israel. Following the Six-Day War (http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/History/1967toc.html) in 1967, things changed. Castro broke relations with the Israel just before the 1973 Yom Kippur War. (http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/History/1973toc.html) He also sent Cuban soldiers to participate in battles on the Syrian side.

Dayan alleged in '74 that a Cuban Bde with 110 tanks had been sent to Syria, but it was unfounded.

However, immediately after the war, over 3,000 Soviet technicians did arrive in Syria.

A Cuban armored unit did deploy to the Golan in 1974. The source of this information is not only the statement by M. Dayan, but also an interview by Castro given on December 22, 1975.

The statement by Dayan was made during a US television interview on 31 Mar 74. The statement by Castro in '75 was a one-liner: It is no secret to anyone that at any given moment of danger and threat to the Republic of Syria, our men were in Syria.. Could be nothing more than Castro's usual vague boasting. It certainly doesn't amount to "confirmation" of the presence of Cuban armor in Syria.

Other than these, and similar unverified statements by politicians, I have never seen any hard confirmation of the presence of Cuban armor. Certainly the histories of the war, by Donald Neff and Edgar O'Ballance don't even mention it. Katz makes a short statement about it in his book, but doesn't back it up with a single source.

If there is real evidence of Cuban armor in Syria at the time beyond simple unverified statements, I'd certainly like to see it. I'm sure some Cuban personnel were in-country, certainly - but the Soviets were in much greater numbers. Hell, if you think about it logically, it would have been much easier for the Soviets to ship'em replacement armor along with their technicians and advisors than it would have been for the Cubans to deploy an armored unit of any size.

I have never heard any reference to Cuban presence in Syria during Yom Kippur. The Misiones Internacionalistas were, to my knowledge, limited to Angola, Ethiopia and, to a lesser extent, some Latin-American countries.

The Navy abandoned their bombing range on Vieques Island. Cuba would make a good alternative.
