Ramallah: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas yesterday said the recent upheaval in Israeli politics amounted to a virtual coup in the Jewish state.
"The transformations of the political parties in Israel represents a near political and social coup d'etat," Abbas told journalists at his West Bank headquarters.
"We must wait to see what other changes will take place in Israel. We are interested in knowing who is going to represent the Israeli people and who is going to negotiate with us," he added.
Israel has experienced huge political changes in the past few weeks.
The left-of-centre Labour has elected a dovish new leader and taken the party out of a coalition government, before Prime Minister Ariel Sharon decided to quit his right-wing Likud party and call an early general election.
While the Palestinians have held off commentary on the personalities at the centre of the upheaval, officials have previously expressed hope that the overhaul will result in a more positive atmosphere in the peace process.
Teenager shot
Meanwhile, Israeli troops shot and seriously injured a Palestinian boy, 14, during a raid in the West Bank city of Nablus, Palestinian rescue workers said.
A total of 10 Palestinians were injured, three from live fire and seven from rubber-coated steel bullets, the officials said. The 14-year-old boy was hit in the head by live fire, they said.
The Israeli army confirmed that it was carrying out a raid to arrest suspected militants in Nablus but did not give further details.
Palestinian witnesses said dozens of Palestinian youths threw firebombs and stones at the troops who entered the city with 40 jeeps, backed by Apache helicopters, and surrounded houses.
