I am the 3rd generation in my family that I really know of. I don't know much about who did what and where before about 1900.
At this very moment I have a brother in law and a cousin in Iraq.

My grandgrandfather was real commbat proven soldier. He was fighting in WWI in Car's army(some sort of elite unit, with minimal height limit, don't know details). After that he fought in Polish army against soviets...In one of those wars he was wounded in lungs. He was tough bastard but at second war he wasn't in army. He was hiding with friends Jewish familiy from Nazis. I know he was officer but don't know the rank.
Both parents were military doctors in the Soviet Army
Grandfather ended WW2 as a lt.colonel in Berlin
There also were some cossaks in the family tree but I do not know all the details.
Maybe my grandmother knew your Dad :). She was a pharmacist in MASH in Anders's army at WWII...She is now lieutenant(porucznik) and she has higest rank in family :). Don't know what rank she had at the time of war, and she is now to sick to ask...
My dad is reservist and has ensign rank(ensign in Polish Army is one rank lower than lieutenant, polish name podporucznik ) he is chemist so he served in NBC unit.
Me: I'm waiting for WWIII to enlist :)

My polish grandfather was in the US militairy during ww2.
Many familiymembers were in the resistance during ww2 in belgium (dont know if that counts). Its was called "The White Brigade". They killed, sabotaged and provided intelligence to the allies.
One of my ucles served in the belgian army a few years.
Another ucle has spend his whole life in the belgian militairy (he recently retired). First he served in the airforce; the defence of airfields with anti-aircraft missles. This he did in germany to bring down those sovjet basterds :bash: in case of ww3.
Then he became a reporter for the belgian militairy and traveld alot. Mostly africa and the middle east.
My father served in the belgian army. First he was in the airforce working radars. Then he spend 10 years als an engineer.
I wanted to join the US army but its kind of hard to do living in belgium and all :P . So i will just have to wait for world war 3.
My Granduncle was a paratrooper during WW2 he fought in Monte Casino. My Dad just was in the bundeswehr just for basic training, he didnt stay there.

A fair number of family members served in WWII. I don't think of myself as coming from a long-time military family though, so much as everyone and their brother was serving at the time. I traveled around some when my father was in the military, but we eventually settled back home in NY.

Take care out there IronHeart.
Both grandfathers served in the big war, as they would say, one in Europe and one spent his time in Guam. Dad was NG and a little late for Vietnam. Wife's dad flew helicopters in Vietnam and has some great pictures that maybe someday I will post. No combat but a lot of pics from the air and horsing around. Not I though, I guess I fell a little too far from the tree as they say.

Father- ROAC. '80s soldier. In Saudi and later Iraq during the whole of the build-up, conflict, and build-down 1990-91. Went to Norway, Falklands (after the war) et cetera.
Uncle- RA. Joined after my Dad, still in. Was in the Gulf as well, along with the Balkans and N.I., and Canada et cetera.
Another Uncle- Never knew him. Welsh Guard (99% sure... I'll have to ask.). Lost his life aboard Sir Galahad.
Grandfather- Not sure exactly what he did, from what I remember he use to jump from Dakotas with AT guns (Could be wrong though.). I don't know if he saw 'action' in WW2, but I know he spent a while in Libya and Palestine.
Other Grandfather- Home Guard.
Great Grandfathers, Uncles Etc- I don't know as much about these relatives, but I know quite a few served in the Navy during both world wars (One or two may have lost their lives.). A few also served in the Army during WW1... Yeomanry I think...
There are quite a few more, but I, unfortunately at the moment, don't know much about them.
As for me, well I might join the Forces when I'm older (after exams etc) to carry on my family's soldiering 'tradition' (Surname is even military related .) and to gain skills and the like. Something at the AWE is more me than a rifle and webbing.

My mothers family military history is respectable also. My Brother was in the army he was in the infantry for just over a year and then became a mechanic for wheeled vehicles. I never served it has was a life long dream to be in the army and live up to what my father and family have done in the past. It has been my greatest regret that I was unable to to join out of high school but one thing happens and turns to another. But I still serve my community and county in other equaly important roles. My wife’s only brother is in kuwait right now. He is the only one from her family to have served. (FYI her father lived in spain under Franco)

Wow, small world. He is still alive, but we have grown apart over the years, unfortunately. He made the jump into Tay Ninh though, I know that for a fact.
On a footnote...The 173rd Airborne conducted the only major combat parachute jump in Vietnam and again it became the only line Airborne unit to perform a combat jump when it Parachuted 1000 paratroopers into Northern Iraq.

I'm ging to assume that is somewhere in the south. Never heard of it. You say you were born there, but were you also raised there. It makes a big difference. I was born and raised in the deep south...have never been further north than Southern Missouri(vacation) nor further west than east Texas(vacation). After 28 years I don't think you can take the Dixie out of me.

Starting with my father.. through some strange means he was quickly promoted up to Captain after ROTC and went into Vietnam where he later worked with Air America and PsyOps and Donald Gregg calls him an "interesting man," so go figure.. actually, I really don't know anything about what my dad does. During Desert Storm/Shield, he worked with General Schwarzkopf, met the President, received a big fat gold medal from the Saudi Government, plus another in a ceremony in Washington.
My grandfather on my mother's side was a pilot during the Korean Conflict, got shot down and was presumed KIA until he made it back to his own lines like a week later.
My grandfather's brother was a Kamikaze pilot, but thankfully was never sent out and later went on to become an Air Force General with the ROK and President of Korean Air.
My Great Grandfather was part of the Japanese High Command, where he functioned as the prime minister for Korea.
..and then further up in history you have generals and such.. but my history is foggy.
..oh, and I'm FORBIDDEN to ever join the military unless I do so as a doctor. So go figure.
