Congress Finds A New Role For Submarine
At 560 feet and 18,000 tons, the USS Florida seems an unlikely candidate to join the special forces, where a low profile is preferred.
Happily, the Florida is not a surface ship but a ballistic missile submarine, the ultimate stealth weapon. Once an overhaul is complete in 2006, it will be able to transport dozens of U.S. commandos on top-secret missions.
