Sorry guys, but how can you post such pictures: Rusian Paratroopers with vodka and beer bottles...looking like clochards!!!??? I mean, all russian soldiers I have seen on pictures, allways look like poor clochards. They have old und thursty uniforms, jackets different as trousers, old boots from the 40ies etc. It is really a pitty.
I mean, look at these guys!

The Russian military may not get as much funds as the American military but they are a proud bunch. I'd serve next to them anyday. I hope to visit Russia either this year or next year.
A question, did Putin change the Russian National Anthem to the old Soviet Anthem??? I had read an article while taking my classes on Soviet/Russian politics and it mentioned that they were considering changing that anthem. To date I think it is the best anthem I have ever heard.
Off to drink some vodka, carry on comrades! Keep that chin high, and from what I studied in college your country will come back strong. Rant over.
Sorbas: I'd like you to say that while facing the working end of an AK-74.

the reason Americans hate Russian Soldiers
Not nice to generalize. Many Americans have posted on this thread, none of them said anything hateful.
showing off is because American soldiers cant do that kinda ****,
No instead, they go to the range, do ruck marches and practice fire and maneuver tactics! :P
(Just kidding, I know Russian troops also do that kind of training ;) )
if they could then they would show off.

Americans show off teamwork and gear while russians show off physical and mental strenghts and toughness.

the reason Americans hate Russian Soldiers showing off is because American soldiers cant do that kinda ****, if they could then they would show off.
Now I have never complained against the russian forces and have a huge amount of respect for them, as well as other former Soviet Countries.
But lets not get retarded:
I remember at a soldiers exchange watching a dude do a back flip and come up firing his AK.. everyone of the Russian cheered and whistled. The few of us Americans looked at the target and said "he didn't hit it, I don't get it." to each other, but clapped anyway.
Perhaps that is the reason why I have never practiced standing backflip and knife throwing.
And I laugh at the US soldeirs that do that kinda **** for anything other than expo or fun, the same way I will laugh at any other military forces (russian included) for the same.
As someone already said, it is for demonstration.

Considering we also were shooting at the target (no more that 15-20m away) and exchanging weapons and the lot.
I'd say NO. But he did however shoot the living **** out of the dirt starting about 1 meter in front of him to about 6 meters out.
But can you tell me if its true that BMD IFV's are designed to be parachuted "battle ready" - ie. manned with crew (3 pers)?
As far as I know they are designed to be dropped from medium altitudes... ie not a few dozen metres with a drag chute to slow them down. They are usually fitted with 6 very large parachutes and have extra retro rockets that fire when a sensor dangling from beneath the platform the vehicle is strapped into hits the ground.
It usually has the crew on board though not always. It has a beacon for the crew and troops to find it and prepare it for use... ie unwrap it, and unstrap it from its pallet.
Or maybe theyre deployed on small height using something analogical to low-level cargo drop?
No.
Are VDV use some sort of shock absorbing platform or rocket brakes in the last phase of landing?
Yes, for most heavy loads tehy ahve a final retro rocket system that reduces impact speed just on impact.
I just remember those SU-85 Airborne assalut guns - they were transported with An 12 - were they deployed in similiar way?
Pretty much, but they were for anti tank capability, the BMD is a troop transport, though there are a large number of variants now, including 120mm mortar version and a longer version with no turret and with ATGMs to replace the ASU-85.
Can somebody explain this picture for me, it looks a bit strange. What is he doing, holfing to the rifle?! Isnt it attached/fastened to his body?
It is my understanding that the VDV are trained to fire from the air. Not a practical thing... they might hit something but more often they just make those on the ground keep their heads down, or disrupt their aim. A bit like a 30 cal MG door gun on a helo... a moral support weapon.
I hate that cind of show stuff. Its in the same class as jumping through fire rings on shows for public.
Think of it as a bravery/confidence thing. If I can break a dozen bricks with my hand then I know how to break bones without hurting myself. Not being afraid of fire, or for that matter blood is an important thing... imagine a doctor who was afraid of blood?
How do they decide who wears the blue and white t-shirt? I've heard its for 'special forces', but that's a pretty general term.
Very long history to it, but basically the blue and white striped T shirt is worn by VDV. During the cold war GRU Spetsnaz hid among VDV units as they also paradrop etc etc, so they wore the same t shirt. The soviet naval infantry wear a dark blue and white striped t shirt and naval spetsnaz wear the same to remain inconspicuous amongst them.
sorry man, that is just my opinion. hats in the neck, tank-tops with blue and white stripes, blond hair...it is 100% gay!
Perhaps there might be a reason they wear their berets that way, the so called tank tops are their uniform, and the colour of ones hair denotes ******ity in what universe?
BTW what is a "clochard"?

This picture was taken during "VDV Day", August 2. The worst day to be in Russia if you are not slavic looking :)
On that day everyone who at some point in their lives served in VDV are celebrating their holliday.
Those guys have experienced something that most people never did and will, the share very special bond.
"Celebrations" include drinking, singing combat songs, fighting and the highlight - jumping into a fountain. There is a place in Moscow called Gorky park, in the center of it there is a fountain which is the ultimate goal of the celebrating crowd. Someone once told me that Moscow brings in Naval infantry to safeguard the fountain and prevent "bathing" because regular police can't do anything.
like I have mentioned before it is also the worst day to be in Russia if you are not slavic looking. Desantniki are simply beating up everyone in their sight, flipping over their cars, etc...

This patch is a from 10th aabn 6th Air Assault Brigade from Poland - my ex-unit. Black stripe on it is from me, cause my battalion was liquidated in 2000. SHAME!!!
I couple of dudes from that unit gave me that same patch for helping them out with something, a few years ago. I want to say he was part of the 18th Air Assualt Bn.

I don't need your money to travel to moscow....I have been a couple of times in Russia. Also, I never said, that these guys are not hard. I just said, that their clothing doesn't look very military, even if it's their celebrating day. To wear tank-tops, barrets in neck and alcohol in public isn't very military and it's a shame for your army. People have to say: Look, this discipline...these guys are a role model for our kids. But, kids only see drunken soldiers. That is my point of view.

No, I'm quite sure my bucks are as safe as in Fort Knox, cause VDV and spetsnaz have the best hand-to-hand sambo technique around the world. And I'm yet to see a guy who can beat anybody with VDV/spetsnaz training in an unarmed combat.

After all, I was originally in VDV. Last year I was in Gorky park with some of my comrades, and our families. That was fun! I had a business suit, but tel'nyashka under it. :D
But I'm too old to break bricks, although have done it once, after numerous demands by my little daughter. After that, I heard them saying to each other "Чучкари пришли!" ("Chuchkaris came"). Chuchkovo is the town where 16 OBr SpN was located until recently.
After that, guys from 45 ORP VDV came up to me, and gave me 4 bottles of "Baltika" beer, and icecream for the ladies. They were very nice. :)

I joined the army in 1983 when the enemy was still the Warsaw Pact, at Plt level we had limited access to good up to date info on our enemy so would watch as much footage from Afganistan and official press releases as possible. So seeing these pic's on here is interesting.
Being a former British Paratrooper myself, the one unit we wanted to pit our wits against was the Russian Airborne............infact on many NATO exercises we would be have to play their 'role' and act as OPFOR.

Not the 10th, and the actual Special Forces are Army SF- "Greenie Beanies".
Otherwise they are SOCOM.
Great pictures by the way.
Granted some might seem somewhat cheesy, but I chalk that up to cultural differences and not a reflection of the professionalism of these Paratroopers.

VDV-Jokes
During an arms expo, the press and visitors gather by the US Army gear exhibit: a huge American Airborne soldier in full gear with all the latest hi-tec gadgetry. There's a panel on his gear with three buttons, red, blue and white. When asked about their functiones, the Americans explained that these control the sophisticated internal thermoregulation and neurostimulation systems. When the soldier is too cold he activates the internal heating cuircutry by pressing the red button, the blue button will cool him down and the white button will inject stimulants that will let the soldier keep on fighting for an entire day even if he's dead tired. Impressed and awed the crowd moves on to the next booth which happens to be the Russian Army gear exhibit. There they see an big Russian VDV soldier in regular gear but with a huge and heavy metal door attached to his back on hinges. The Russian explain that this is the latest Russian innovation that works like this: when the soldier is too hot, he opens the door and cools down, when he's too cold, he shuts it and warms up, and when he's dead tired, he just ditches the damn thing and keeps on fighting for another week!
A Russian VDV soldier is on a date with a girl during his R&R. They are walking in a romantic park but they can't seem to make a good contact. So the girl assumes the initiative and says: "Well I've dated soldiers before and it's always very interesting. For example this communications guy told me so much about the stuff he does that I think I can use the Morze code now. And this tanker described the stuff they are tought in such an interesting way that I think I could drive a tank now. There must be some cool stuff they teach you too? The VDV pauses and then reluctantly says: "Do you really want me to break your jaw?"
1984, a VDV company is being sent to Afghanistan. After months of rigorous training and indoctrination the Sarge tells them when the plane is landing: "You are the elite, you will be fighting like crazy and destroy the enemy. In recognition, the command will pay a hundred roubles for each dukh's (haji) head." The plane lands and the eager VDV run out on the tarmac and into the city. Half an hour later the come back, some carry one head, some two, the recon guys bring an entire sack full of hadji's heads. The Sarge cries in horror: "What the **** have you done, idiots! This is still Tashkent, we've just landed for an hour to refuel on our way to Afghanistan!"
Two cops spot a drunken rowdy VDV soldier in a public park, and after some hesitation decide that he should be apprehended. "You go first, says one, and then I'll avenge you".
Before a VDV company jumps for the first time, an instructor cheers them up on the runway: "Don't worry, statistically only one in a thousand shute malfunctions, and there's only two hundred of you here".
A VDV Sergeant is instructing a groop of new VDV conscripts, he tells them that after VDV training they will be able to do all kinds of things that regular soldiers can't, for example drive 10-inch nails into the fence with their bare foreheads. The young conscripts are sceptical so the Sarge goes: "OK worms, allow me to demonstrate!" He takes one ten-incher, puts it to the wooden fence and rams it with his forehead. Despite all expectations, the nail doesn go in, but simply bends. The Sarge is like, WTF? He takes five more and repeats the procedure, all nails bend but refuse to go in the fence. The conscripts are laughing and the Sarge is outraged, he looks to the check the other side of the fence and yells with relief: "****, I knew that the zampolit (XO's political deputy) was peeping on the other side!"
Yugoslavia, late 90's. A Russian VDV peacekeeper is chilling on top of a hill when a platoon of US Marines is passing by. He yells at them: "Hey ladies, I bet I could take any three of you!" and vanishes behind the hill. The American sergeant wants to teach the obnoxious Russian a lesson and sends three of the biggest meanest marines in the platoon. They go behind the hill, some violent struggle is heard then the same Russian shows up on top of the hill and yells again: "Told ya! I bet I can take your whole platoon you pussies!". The US Sergeant is outraged and commands his entire platoon to go and get him the Russian's head. The Marines charge and soon disappear behind the hill. More violent struggle is heard, then a single the American, badly messed up, emerges crawling from behind the hill and screams: "Sarge, call for backup immediately, it's an ambush! There's TWO of them there!"

The closest to Barnaul GRU Specnaz unit is 67th Brigade in Berdsk. But they may be from some recon batallion. Russia has a lot of special and elite status troops

Could very well have been posted before, but perhaps it doesn't matter...
Nikogda 45 polk ne podchinyalsya GRU, starshii leitenant na foto nikakogo otnosheniya k 45mu polku ne imeet.
S uvazheniem starshii sergant 45go polka.
Tochno tak, so dnya obrazovania "volki" vsegda deystvovali v interesah VDV, chem kardinalno otlichayutsya ot GRU. Privet Kubinke :)
That's it. From the very beginning "wolves" were operating in the way to feed with recinformation the parent branch - VDV - while GRU is providing recinformation to higher levels.
