Is it difficult and/or expensive to build a computer? I wouldn't know where to begin.
Please advise.

Actually it's very easy, you don't need to be a computer-geek to do it.
If you start from the scratch, you first need a Tower, then select a good MoBo (your local dealer will help you) and the chipset, RAM, HDD, floppy, graphic-card, additional drives (DVD, burner etc.).
You put the chipset on your MoBo, plug in your RAM, graphic-card, attach the drives - done. ;)
Pentium 4 1800mhz
256mb 400mhz Rd ram
WD SE 120GB + Maxtor 40GB 8mb cache=240GB
ATI Radeon 9100 64mb
NEC 8x DVD-RW
Lite On 52-32-52 CD-RW

Built at a local shop to my specs (I wanted to build it myself, but my dad wasn't too happy about that, and he was the investor):
Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz (800 fsb)
1024 MB DDR PC3200
ASUS mobo (can't be arsed to dig out the specs)
2x120 and 1x80 (so thats 320 GB) of maxtor 7200 rpm harddisks.
Geforce 2 Ti (temporary solution, still waiting for a 'winner' in the graphics card battle)
SoundBlaster Live! (yeah cheap, but it's not like there's any difference between this and the Audigy)
17" Iiyama top-of-the-line CRT monitor

Generally, it's cheaper to build a high-performance computer than it is to buy one, often because you can take parts from your old computer (i.e. CD-ROM, power supply, hard drive) and put those in the one you're building rather than buy completely new ones. It can be a little tricky to put together, but basically you just gotta read the manual from the motherboard and it'll have a diagram showing all the sockets for different wires.

Mobile Pentium 4 - 2.4 Ghz
DDR PC2700 - 768 Mb
ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 M9 - 64 Mb DDR Video Memory
Toshiba HDD - 40 Gb
More than adequate for school and good enough for me when it come to gaming. The nice thing is that the only thing that I can't manually upgrade is the video card, everything else is upgradable anytime I got the money.

yeh my computer is loud as hell, all 14+ fans wirring is really annoying
Seoulstriker
02-14-2004, 02:40 PM
what i don't like about my computer is that the front is so open that my hard drive is the loudest component of my computer, with my processor fan being the second loudest.
i'm eventually going to get a thermalright sp-97 (if i go with AMD in teh future) with a 92mm tornado fan on a variable fan speed bus. i heard that it is still pretty loud with that, so i just might go with a normal 92mm fan. :)

Maintenance? I haven't done any maintenace to my water since Feb 2003. Conventional cooling on the other hand requires you to spray your heatsink&fans with compressed air every 6 months because of all the dust impede the air flow

don't you need to have a resevoir of cold liquid to cycle through the computer?
Jack Mehoff

It's a special kind of fluid that will last you for at least one year. I use the same fluid for a year now and the CPU temp is still the same

Water cooling is no different than air cooling, except the box/case is ****ing heavy as hell. You do not need any kind of external plumbing for it to work
