So...I get a call from my dad today to let me know that my grandpa (82) is finally on his last leg and succombing to the cancer thats been eating away at him for years now..he lived a full life, had kids..grandkids..and even several great-grandkids...he is a WW2 vet and always very proud of his service onboard a sumbarine in the south pacific. He is insisting that I be part of the military funeral.which I would be honored to do. During my time in the Army I have been part of many burial services, but I have always been on the firing party..this time I have to present the flag to my grandmother......I know there is something (on behalf of a grateful nation) thing I'm supposed to say, but I cant find any FM's or any references about it...to any old-timmers...any advice?

thanks...eventhough I am army..I present the flag to a former navy guy..so

Navy: On behalf of the President of the United States and the Chief of Naval Operations, please accept this flag as a symbol of our appreciation for your loved one's service to this Country and a grateful Navy.

I hope the "chief of Naval operations" doesnt mind an army guy talking on HIS behalf.:)

Every Navy retirement or funeral I've been to, someone says that. I swear.

Where the hell are all the Navy dudes, I didn't make that up.

PS, Laconian is right. I dig Sgt Rock. I probably have that issue in storage somewhere.

he's not even dead yet....and it seems all my relatives are making preperations allready....kinda wierd..matter of a few days say the Doc's. My dad is a mess..I've never seen the guy like that...its a bit disturbing, but I dont blame him...when I was a kid my dad insisited that I go work for him every summer...he would pay me 20 dollars a week for working on his farm.......that guy worked my ASS of....bailing hay...mending fence...taught me a lot...I'm gonna miss the bastard..he was an asshole, but taught me a world of ****.....:) I owe him the kind of life lessons you cant learn anywhere else....I hope the same for MY son.

So this shot is for Joe Lingo...helluva guy, may god have mercy on his soul.

Having bailed hay and all that sh*t before myself I can see how that would make him hard. That's some hard ass work. How'd you end up such a pussy? p-)

Families cope anyway they possibly can. Hope you guys get through this.

You know, since it's your grandpa that's insisting you be part of the military funeral, you could simply ask *him* what it is he'd like you to say.

That whole "On behalf of a grateful nation..." just seems too cold and distant to say to your own grandmother.

PS: "Fair winds and following seas" would seem something more appropriate to say to your grandfather the sailor, not to his wife.

Dude..I was 16...this guy worked me to a pulp....if me or my brother ever fought, he would go out to the back yard...cut a few switches off a willow tree...shave them down..make us pick one, and tell us "Game on bitches!"..you wanna fight,.. well fight!...we would beat eachother too a pulp...until we couldnt do it anymore...........he would laugh his ass off......WE LEARNED OUR LESSONS...and he knew we would... that cheap bastard.....I LOVE HIM FOR IT...cause I look back on it and that man taught me more than any school ever has.

****,
Sorry to hear, but you know I never worry about guy's like your Grandpa! If he is anything like you, he's going to a better place. He's seen and done more things in his lifetime and contributed more to his country than most people can appreciate.

Don't forget to say what comes natural to you. He was probably a wonderful soldier, but he had a life outside the Military. As you mentioned, he had kids and Grand kid's I'm sure he's proud of. If you were close to him, personalize your eulogy. What about the time you went fishing, camping etc....

Did he have a sense of humor? Throw that in, it's very uplifting!

Good luck bud!
