KABUL, Afghanistan Feb. 13 — A barrage of rockets landed on the airport in an eastern Afghan city gripped by rebel violence, causing no injuries but drawing retaliatory air strikes by U.S. forces, an official said Friday.
Some 21 rockets landed in and around the airport in Khost, 90 miles south of Kabul, in the attack around midnight Thursday, said Mamur Said, spokesman of local military commander Gen. Khial Baz.
After the attack, U.S. helicopters swooped in on nearby mountains and fired on the area from which the rockets were believed launched, according to Said.
The U.S. military in Kabul had no immediate comment.
Earlier this week, the deputy intelligence chief of Khost province was gunned down in the city by an assailant who then blew himself up after guards pursued him.
The insurgent campaign by remnants of the hard-line Taliban and al-Qaida has focused on areas in the east and south, near Afghanistan's border with Pakistan.
