I don't think she's a part of the ISAF force down there. The way I understood it is that they send these field entertainers from Sweden, they stay a few days in Afghanistan then go back. I don't think there are any women in the Swedish ISAF force... But there are quite a few in the KFOR one.

They had green before the Swedish desert scheme was produced... the only other times in recent history Swedish forces had a need to use desert uniform they got to use some from the US Army (Somalia, Saudi A)

Now it's a mix of green and desert cause they are still evaluating the desert camo

Thanks for the kind words man. Yeah, Sweden is slowly but surely increasing its military presence in Afghanistan.

During the annual defence conference a few days ago, a Swedish officer who served in Afghanistan delivered this incredible speech and it almost seriously brought tears to my eyes. Especially when he started talking about the two soldiers who were killed. That they knowingly risked their lives trying to make a better life for the Afghans. Things like that just make me really appreciate what all the soldiers out there are doing.

Does anyone know if the Swedes are deploying to southern Afghanistan. The Dutch are apparently not sending troops. Why is it when the threat level increases everyone backs out! Hopefully more NATO allies step forward, not just Great Britain, Canada, and the U. S. have a military presence come Feb.

No.
Sweden is currently adding troops to take over all the QRF activities in Mazar-i-Sharif (currently shared between Sweden and the UK) with ISAFs intention that this will free up UK resources to deploy elsewhere in the country.

I should say that the troops are available to ISAF best way they seem fit, the location is not set in stone by the government, they can go anywhere. It's an agreement between the Swedish military and ISAF to base operations from Mazar-i-sharif but that doesn't mean smaller teams will not go elsewhere. (We also have Swedes in Kabul)

Broad support in the parliament for a long term commitment to afghanistan... also 4th largest donor country... so anyway we will be there for a long time...

I was like pussy....first time I heard....but the role of the force is reconstruction and civil tasks....nothing to do with fighting the enemy with combat arms....thus the need for the force is voided (according to the dutch) and thus they will not commit to a flawed force (again as they see).

Thats good, thats what I mean. Yes we (Canada) have a small military and we didn't participate in the invasion of Iraq (I personally, and alot of my mates agree with me, we should have been there too) but we have still maintained Naval forces for OEF and a strong contingent for ISAF. Monday morning the boys and myself head back to Khandahar and it would be f*****g awsome to have our true nato allies there. It bugs me when some nations take on the simple and easy missions, but want to sit at the head table when dinner is served. Anyways I'm ranting, good job Sweden, you guys definitly do your job. Don't think I'm refering my negative comments to you. Cheers!

Resurrection

Never knew you were serving in A-stan. :) Yeah, it'd be great if Sweden had some forces down in the south to help you guys out but the government wants to officially keep our contribution strictly humanitarian (you know the usual bullsh*t) and not support OEF which is different in many ways from the ISAF mission. Well someone needs to be in the north, and that someone would be us. In April (I think) we're taking over the Mazar-e-Sharif PRT from the Brits.

Obviously the Swedish contingent's task there is not only humanitarian, as I fail to understand why SSG was sent there in the first place if that was the case. Anyway, it all comes down to what the politicians want. And just because they want something, doesn't mean that the country as a whole does. ;)

Btw I think you already know this, but Sweden isn't a member of NATO.

Swedish soldiers supported the Afghan-Army (ANA) in a operation to capture a man, suspected of prepareing military activity against Afghan-Authority. A few shots was fired from the vicinity of the village when the ANA entered the village(no one got hit). ANA never found the man, but his house was searched for evidence of his activity. The swedish soldiers task was to secure parts of the area round the village.

I se that the Norwegian guys was also there, looks like the QRF from PRT-MES (top right corner)

22 min tv report about swedish soldiers in afghanistan. Its pretty negative about the swedish involement, but its ok to watch

Kalla.Fakta.del1.om.Afghanistan.och.Boka.070308
Svenska soldater i människojakt

Två svenska elitsoldater dödades i Afghanistan i november 2005.
TV4:s Kalla fakta kan avslöja att ledaren för gruppen som misstänks ligga bakom attentatet dödades i en stor militärinsats, ledd av svenska soldater i något som ser ut som en människojakt.

Rotation in the Swedish camp
FS12 is going home and FS13 is taking over.

FS13 got a fierce opening on their tour, 15 April 04.30 Swedish time a charge went of under one of the cars in a Swedish convoy. The incident happen in the Qushtepa-area/Jowzjan-province 200 km southwest of Mazar-i-Sharif.
Fortunately the soldier that was hit only received minor injurys to the back,
and the soldier was airlifted (by our German friends) to the fieldhospital in the German Camp/Marmal.

Quite nice colour on that PaTgb 203A, the brown looks darker than the one other countries use, and makes it look more unique. Should be a good thing if the Afghans pushing the button on IED's care about not hurting soldiers from nice countries as Sweden. Could be a bit bigger Swedish flags though.

Oh, and nice seeing that the Patria XA-203 series is over there in the first place. Would be typical seeing them rolling around in Kosovo where there is no real use of the offered protection.

I just thought this was worthy of a post.

A third Swedish Officer in Afghanistan has been awarded the US Army Commendation Medal.

Freely translated.

Colonel Anders E. Gustavsson was recently awarded the US Army Commendation Medal for his extraordinary work as a leader of the Operational Mentoring and Liason Team on brigade level in the North as well as being a personal mentor to the Afghani Brigadier. He and his 80 European and American collegues have done a great job in improving the capabilities of the Northern Afghani Brigade as a whole and the individual capabilities of the Afghani Officers and Soldiers.

To all Swedes:

TV4 is showing a documentary about our soldiers in A-stan

Fredsstyrkan

Tid: 20:00-21:00

Svensk dokumentärserie från 2008. Del 1 av 6. Programstart. Bredbild.

.........................

The new design on the swedish armed forces hompage have onfortunately made this thread go dry. Al the pic's on the new page are locked and useless, as you can se in my previous reply.

For some info the swedish ISAF force have been increased from 250 in 2005 to 330 in 2006 and now from the spring of 2007 380 soldiers. And in the last couple of days (during the seminar "people and defence" in Sälen) the Minister of Defence in Sweden have announced that more troops can be in the tube. But he olso said that the increase in the ambition can also consist of a MEDEVAC/CASEVAC helo-resource from the 2009, wath the new contribution will be is determined by wath is needed the most.

Here are a couple of liks to pic-slides that you can watch at the swedish armed forces hompage.
