It is actually the 1/6th scale model of a real weapon, I found it once on on of the sites:
It is a semiautomatic underbarrel shotgun with a special compensator for shotguns (to lessen recoil), basically it is a semi auto version of the old pump action underbarrel shotgun for the M4.

It's termed the LSS for Lightweight Shotgun System. 12 gauge manufactured by Colt I seem to remember, 6 round detachable mag? Part of SOPMOD Block 3 I think?
Anyone know if they've been field trialled?

1st post here... gday fellas,
if you want to see one of those shotguns being used..... in the movie "THE ONE" the swat team blokes are armed with them in the loading bay of the station. May be slightly un-realistic because he was cycling it manually but hey... at least they're recognising the new wave.
What the hell are toys doing on this site???!!!!

While we are talking "toys", I thought I would bring up the issue of toys and the family of Randy Shugart. Dragon Models and other companies were sponsoring a convention for collectors in Ontario, CA. Dragon Models, the premier 1/6 scale model manufacturer for collectors, was going to produce a limited edition set of Shugart and Gordon and sell them to conventioneers for $100 bucks each and donate all proceeds to the families of Shugart and Gordon at an opening night banquet. Mike Durant and Danny McKnight (who has a Dragon figure in his honor) were scheduled to attend and accept the donations (originally planned for $10,000 total and later offered up to $20,000) on behalf of the families.
Apparently, Stephanie Shugart consulted with an attorney and torpedoed the whole thing. I have no idea why, but apparently Carmen Gordon was already on board. I have only read the convention promoter's side of the story which you can see here (http://www.weekendofheroes.com).
The opening banquet event now features World War II MOH recipient Walt Ehlers, the only survivor of two brothers in the Big Red One who were in the D-Day invasion at Omaha Beach. Walt and his brother Roland, KIA at Omaha Beach, will be honored with the Dragon commemorative instead.

Found this tidbit on DefRev: http://www.defensereview.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=118
According to that, it's not semi-auto.
Be interesting to find out what sort of tax stamps you'd need to get your paws on one of these things. p-)

Very interesting. I had figured the whole 'Master Key' concept was dead. Interesting point on the action of the LSS though; the bolt action operation would lead to a broader range of loads to select. In semi autos there are a number of lower powered rounds (Such as bean-bag) that will not cycle properly.

4RAR Australian CDO units have been issued with M4/shotgun combinations, not the LSS but a more conventional looking pump action 12ga shotgun positioned under the barrel like the M203 and LSS are. Probably good for breaching without having to reach for a different weapon.
