Just get your boot of choice and introduce them to the delights of Kiwi Boot polish!

I got past the scrutineers on cambrian patrol with black polished civi mountineering boots.

Why do you need to replace your current Lowas?

Another pair of Lowe, I've never had a problem with mine.

I use my Haix Tibet allmost daily (1.5 years and counting) and the only thing that might be a problem is that they're a bit warm in the summer (which black boots aren't...). Great quality and even though I'm a bit careless about them, not cleaning them when I should (I suck I knoe! But it was my money... (apr. 300 bucks). I've heard great stuff about Meindl too, but I'm no expert hehe.

Good luck in your search for shoes!

Lowa's - but if you've got a stack of cash, you might consider some HAND MADE, CUSTOM BUILT Alt Bergs...

Yup got to admit that Altbergs are good boots... still like my Lowe's though. Just realised Altberg's are made 20 mins down the road from me in North Yorkshire. I wonder if they sell cheaper in their shop?? Worth a look me-thinks.

danners are over priced and over rated.

raichles rule in my book, especially for stiffness to weight ratio, but it depends on the shape of your foot. Raichles have a narrow heel box but large 'last' in the fore foot (although this can be reduced with inner soles).

I have the current issue Infantry Combat Boot issues by the Army and they're a great boot.

Meindl Gore Tex's I have are very good. They weigh a bit, but the soles(Vibram-soles) are exceedingly sturdy and have good grip also on ice. Walking softens them, but not in a way most shoes, soles haven't given in a bit and that is a quality I like. Ankle support is good, hockey skate like.

I haven't got much signs of wear in the boots from two years of military and hunting use. Some places have become a bit shinier, but all parts function like designed. No leakages of course.

Due to the heavy construction the boots may not be the best in very warm weather, but I have used them in +20 as well as -20 degrees C, and they are quite comfortable throughout.

For dual purpose go for Lowa's.

Danners are better as combat boots and Merrells, KSBs and Asolos are better mountain boots, but Lowas are the best compromise.

Lowa's are a smart way to go. Tanarks are perfect for a lighter weight/rugged boot (these are glove leather lined btw, along with the Trekker's) They are built on lasts that are like a real foot, not something sorta resembling a foot. I have several pair for different uses and I will not wear anything else.

Lowa's will fit Low volume/narrow feet all the way to thick wide feet and you can get them in brown, tan or black, some are crampon compatable.

The "Task Force" line is the black color. I did read an article on the Lowa site some time back from a soldier in Afghani, he wore the Tanarks and loved them.

If you have questions about them, the folks at summit hut sell the whole line and know the boots well, thats where I get mine.

I wore Meindls for a year while deployed and they are still THE boots I have ever had the pleasure of introducing my feet to. I still wear them for extended field ftxs. They are the best for mountain and heavy long range humping for multiseason use. Others are simply no match! The quality is overwhelming.

One advice though. Forget Danners. You pay a lot getting them to Europe and many models are infact China made and the quality has been lacking according to many longtime Danner users.

Having said that, the Lowas and Hanwags(UK made I believe) are supposedly very much the same in quality to Meindls when durability, form and performance and similar models are compared.

I guess if you're a happy camper with your Lowas why not get the same set? Then again, if you have the opportunity to try Hanwags or Meindl why would you not?

Edit: just do not buy from internet for fsakes!

I have completely different opinion about the grip, but it must depend on the model.

Mine have better grip than e.g. the Finnish army boot, excellent grip even in snow and ice inc. steep slopes. :)
