WELLINGTON, N.Z. -- Forty men dressed up as Santas, many of them drunk, went on a rampage through Auckland, robbing stores, assaulting security guards and urinating from highway overpasses.
The rampage, dubbed Santarchy, began yesterday when the men, wearing ill-fitting costumes, threw beer bottles and urinated on cars from an overpass, police said.
The Santas targeted a corner store, where they snatched beer and soft drinks. "They came in, said 'Merry Christmas' and then helped themselves," said store owner Changa Manakynda.
Santarchy is designed to protest the commercialization of Christmas.
