You can say that SAAB actually started designing and producing their own airplanes back in the 1920´s. Back than Sweden had several companies producing airplanes and Svenska Aero ("Swedish Air")was one of them. After licensebuilding som planes (Heinkel) mainly for the navy their first fighterdesign was the J 5 Jaktfalken ("Fighting Falcon"). It was a prototype (or pre-production) to the fighter that became J 6 Jaktfalken in the swedish airforce wich they ordered in 1929.

18 J 5/6 Jaktfalken were produced and in service between 1930-41

Svenska Aero also produced two trainerversions of the Jaktfalken for the airforce. But after some trouble with the engine only one was delivered. The SK 8 Skolfalken (School Falcon)

Another trainerplane from the company was the SA-10 Piraten (the Pirate). Only one was produced to the airforce and in service between 1929-37.

In the 1930´s Svenska Aero was bought by another (richer) company, namely ASJA (AB Svenska Järnvägsverkstädernas Aeroplantillverkning - "Co. Swedish Railroadworkshop Airplanesmanufacturing") and in 1937 Svenska Aero/ASJA formed the company wich we know today- SAAB (Svenska aeroplanaktiebolaget - "Swedish airplanecorporation")

Their first designed and produced plane was the SAAB 17. In the airforce it designated B 17 as the dive-bomberversion and S 17 as a reconnaissance aircraft.

322 B 17/S 17 were built and in service between 1941-1955. 46 B 17 were sold to the Ethiopian Air Force in the late 40´s.

The next SAAB-plane was the medium bomber/reconnaissance SAAB 18. Later on a torpedo bomber version were built. In the airforce called B 18 (bomber), S 18 (reconnaissance) and T 18 (torpedo)

About 250 planes were built and in service 1944-59.

The SAAB 21 was a unconventional twin-boom fighter wich was next out of the assemblylines. A fighterversion (J 21) and a attackversion were built (A 21) and the last 60 planes had a jetengine (A 21R) - the first jetfighter made by SAAB. Due to the risks with the propeller behind the pilot, the J 21 was one of the first aircraft in the world to be fitted with an ejection seat.

The trainer SAAB 91 Safir ("Sapphire”) was SAABs first internationel success. First flown in 1946 it was sold to over 20 contries (both civilian and airforces). Over 320 were built of wich 1/3 of them under license in Holland. Many still flies today after 60 years it was first introduced.

Called SK 50 in the swedish airforce it was retired in 1992.

The SAAB 90 Scandia was SAABs first real attempt to reach the civilian airlinermarket. First flown in 1946 it could take 30 passengers. But due to the fact that SAAB at that time was so buissy producing militaryaircrafts, the production of SAAB 90 Scandia was set aside for the favour of SAAB 29 Tunnan.

Only 18 produced between 1949-51, in service with SAS and Brazilian airlines.

The SAAB 29 Tunnan ("the Barrel") will most likely never win any beautycontests but it was a very good jetfighter. First flown in 1948 it could more then well stand up to the F-86 or MiG-15´s. A fighter (J29), attack (A29) and reconnaissanceversion (S29) were built
Nine J 29 together with two S 29 (the photo reconnaissance version) were used by the Swedish UN forces in the Congo in the beginning of the 60´s. It showed an outstanding serviceability even under these very different conditions. It also showed a good resistance to ground fire.

A total of 661 SAAB 29 were built, 30 were sold to Austria in the 1960´s. In the swedish airforce it was in service 1951-1976.

The SAAB 32 Lansen ("the Lance") flew the first time in 1952. 456 SAAB 32 were built in three versions (fighter-J32, attack-A32 and reconnaissance-S32). Entered service in 1955 it was´nt decomissioned until 1998 (12 aircraft modified for electronic warfare).

IMO, the SAAB 35 Draken ("Dragon") is one of the most beautiful planes ever. First flown in 1955 the last SAAB 35 was decomissioned from the austrian airforce this year. Over 600 built in several versions (fighter, attack, reconnaissance and school).

They were in service in Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Austria.

SAAB 105 is a conventionell advanced military trainer. Besides being a trainer it is also used as a light attackplane. Other versions have a reconnaissance camera in the nose. First flown in 1963 the swedish airforce ordered 150 of them called SK 60. Deliveries started in 1966. In 1970-72 40 SAAB 105 was exported to Austria.

In 1968 SAAB bought the aircraftcompany MFI (Malmö FlygIndustrier -"Malmö AviationIndustries). MFI had previously produced a successful piston trainer, the MFI-9 (wich actually saw combat in the Nigeria/Biafra-war in 1969. Armed with french SNEB 68-millimeter rockets and led by the swede Carl Gustaf von Rosen and other swedish volountair pilots these "Biafra Babies" fought on Biafras side, destroying enemy MiGs and Ilyushin bombers on the ground and supporting ground troops. About 250 to 300 MFI-9 were built).
SAAB then produced a slightly scaled-up version of the MFI-9 for use as a primary trainer or military utility aircraft called SAAB MFI-15 Safari or SAAB T 17 Supporter. Production started in 1972 included a light attackversion that could be fitted with up to six pylons with a total warload of 300 kilograms (660 pounds). Qualified weapons included unguided rockets; two machine-gun pods, each with two guns, for a total of four guns; or six Bantam wire-guided antitank missiles.
Sold to many airforces (such as Sierra Leone, Norway, Denmark, Zambia and Pakistan) most of the 250 produced where sold to civilians when production ended in the late 70´s. The plane was/is also produced in Pakistan called "Mushshak" with over 210 built. At least 25 was sold to Iran in the early 90´s.

SAAB 37 Viggen ("the thunderbolt") probably don´t need much introduction. The first prototype of this multi-role fighter flew in february 1967 and it entered service in 1971. The swedish airforce recieved 108 AJ 37 (attackversion), 17 SK 37 (School) and 55 SF/SH 37 (reconnaissance). Between 1979-90 149 JA 37 Viggen (fighterversion) was delivered.

A couple of weeks ago this SF 37 Viggen made its final landing. It is the end of the Viggen-era forever. The only ones remaining in the airforce will be about 10 SK 37E (ECM-version).

SAAB 39 Gripen is the latest, and probably the last fighter SAAB will design and produce on their own.

SAAB 340 was produced between 1985-1998. Around 460 were built and they are serving as airliners or military versions all over the world.

The SAAB 2000 was a stretched 50 seat, faster development of the successful 340. In 1998 production ended with 63 built.
