Delayed Entry Program.
 I'm affraid it's not any clearer to me . What's that mean ?
I was going to start a new topic but since you asked what this was. My oldest son is join the Corp. After he graduates this year.
http://www.marines.com/enlisted_marines/delayedentryprogram.asp
http://www.marinerecruiting-lp.com/poolee_pics.htm<---Some photos of future Marines (Sloppy civilians  )
Join the Marine Corps Delayed Entry Program (DEP), and join a group of motivated individuals on the path to achievement and success.
The Delayed Entry Program allows prospective recruits the opportunity to get personal affairs in order, and become better physically and mentally prepared before departing for Recruit Training. During this time, future Marines will have scheduled meetings and activities with their recruiter, and will become acquainted with other recruits in their area as they prepare to ship to training.
As part of the DEP you will:
Maintain weekly contact with your recruiter.
Attend scheduled meetings with your recruiter and other program participants. At the meetings, you will participate in physical conditioning training, receive information regarding the general history and traditions of the Corps, and learn about other general subjects designed to enhance your preparedness for Recruit Training.
If you have not already graduated, continue to attend and graduate high school. Your graduation and educational training is important to achieving success in life and in the Marine Corps. Your recruiter will help you to monitor your progress.
Independently follow a personal physical training program and monitor progress weekly. The goal of the program is for you to pass the Initial Strength Test all recruits must master in order to begin Recruit Training.
Meet and maintain the established height and weight standards.
Contact your recruiter of any changes in your status – like new address or phone number, marriage or children, and changes to your medical condition or legal obligations.
Conduct yourself in a manner that is honorable to you, your family and the Marine Corps.

Allright , thank you . Only the USMC have this sort of program , or the regular Army , Navy , or Airforce also have this kind of Pre-join help ? I heard something about ROTC , is that have something to do with this ?
It is nice to have that program exist , by the way . Helps the trainies not to get into initial military "shock" .

I know the Army has the program but not sure about the Air Force and Navy. About ROTC might need to ask someone in that program.

I have always had the greatest respect for Marines, I think considering they have to work with so much less than the other branches they do an awesome job.
The fact that no matter what your job description, i.e. cook, mechanic or whatever, you are first and foremost a rifleman, all members of the Marines are trained to fight as riflemen and I think thats whats given them the edge in many battles of the past.

For every dollar the US gov't spends on defense the US Marine Corps gets approx. 6 cents! The US gov't loves the Corps because they get the most bang for their buck. As far as I know all the branches have a Delayed Entry Program, I think it is great, and if anyone does join the military attend all the Poole Functions you can, you'll be better off at boot camp.
Now for the officer side of the house, other then ROTC, the USMC's Platoon Leaders Class/Officer Candidate Class (what I am in) is the only program that has a DEP style training regime before going to OCS. Here in Tucson we go on humps about every other week. Last one we did was a 15miler, next one is an 18miler. We do a lot of practical application, like land nav, fire team, and squad formations, etc etc.

Yes, the Air Force does have a DEP program, but in my experience it's more geared toward making sure you stay out of trouble while you're waiting to ship out, not lessening the shock of the transition to military life (not that joining the Air Force is very "shocking"). My DEP was a joke - we went bowling with DEPers from other recruiting officers and spent a couple afternoons at the range skeet shooting. One of my best friends, who is now a Marine, did weekly PT with his recruiters up until he shipped out, which is how it should be.

1) USMC use equipments, facilities, training from the Army and Navy
2) I assume it would cost less to feed a 100,000 in USMC than 500,000 in the Army
3) Pay, Tricare, benefits, etc. in the military is virtually the SAME
Honestly, i really don't see how an average Army infantryman have more equipments than average USMC infantryman. What do we have that you don't have? It cost more to train an average Marine than the average soldier.
Hell, you guys get more ammo to shoot in BRM than us. I wish the Army have that kind of money to have more ammo for practice because there is not such thing as enough ammo for practice.

I didn't see modern NVGs until 1995. When I got to the FMF, I had an an old school H-Harness (Vietnam era), and our radios were AN/PRC 77s, not SINCGARS. GPS were the old bricks from 1990, not PLGRS.
Anyway... I had an M16A2 that worked wonders. Good enough.

For reserves it is 6 years

Dude just look in any of the OIF photo albums... I'm sure you'll begin to notice alot more M-4's, scopes, DM rifles, day packs, kneepads, all the B.S. that the higher echelons in the army beleive make a better soldier. We get hand-me-downs no ****. I garauntee on most items you'd see in our armory we're at least a generation behind the Army.

I thought USMC have M16A4 as their new rifles?
I'm willing to trade all the kneepads/elbowpads for ammo to practice on the BRM range. Deal?
As for NVG, I don't know what kind of NVGs they issue in USMC. But I do know Army has AN/PVS-7B. Some Army units still have AN/PVS-5 which is dirt old

You know, I have the utmost respect for Marines and what they voluntarily endure for this country but damn, a lot of them need an attitude adjustment. I am a member of one of the "lesser" branches of service, and I am at a joint-service post. I honestly wonder if there is a brain-washing course in their boot camp. I am proud to say that I can call a few jarheads my friends but it seems that their "Semper Fi" has simmered quite noticeably now that they face inevitable deployment to Iraq.
On a related note, a true story...one day some Marines challenged a group of people to a push-up contest, and were all beaten by...(deep breath)...an airman! They still won't admit it though.

I put this pull-up bar between a door and I alway do 10 pull ups everytime I go through that door. I think i go in and out of that door at least 20 times a day.
