it sounds like kerry is the center of the media's attention. i wonder if it ever occurred to them that probably a third of the nation really cares about the democratic primary.

It's awareness by osmosis.

If the media report it often enough, people will know and form opinions. It's like Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. Do the rest of the world REALLY care? No. But it'll be hard to find someone who didn't know.
