hell of a tactic to kill insurgents...

MOSUL, Iraq--The first thing the members of 4th Platoon, Charlie Co., noticed when they dismounted their Stryker vehicle Tuesday was the 12-foot-tall pale yellow cement wall pock-marked with bullet holes.
It was a sure sign the platoon had found a prime fishing hole for the enemy in a central neighborhood of this northern Iraqi city of 2.5 million.

"Today we're the bait," Staff Sgt. Joshua Clevenger said. "Human bait."

Next thing they'll do is start wandering around naked and unarmed, wearing great big signs that says "I KILLED YOUR UNCLE AND RAPED YOUR SISTER". That will get them going p-)

Bloody hell, paint a bulls eye on yer arse and go out on the range, that's a bloody bad tactic if you ask me. Risky atleast.

spoken like some one who does not know what the hell he is talking about.

ofcourse the news article does not say everything you need to know but it's a valid techique...helo pilots do it, grunts do it, even the insurgants use it... Somtime it's called a baited ambush other times not...

the word baiting seems kind of misleading, sounds more like encouraging contact.

Air forces have been using these tactics for years...getting the enemy to engage you first...ie Weasels.

That's some cold-blooded action, walking around and waiting to get shot at...

How successful is this tactic?

The have been using it since the American Revolution(maybe even before).. Its taught in most small unit tatics course. Scout helo's use it all the time.
So I would say it's very successful.

These guys are not just standing out in the road with a bulls eys on their backs as someone has suggested.

You know I was going to answer how this actully works but OPSEC is the key. I wouldnt wanna spoil the suprise.

In the Canadian Army we call that "A to C", Advance to Contact.

You need to make contact with the enemy if you are to destroy him. That means getting off your bottom and going out there, "closing with and destroying the enemy".

Gotta' have the RADAR emitting in order for HARMs to work.
