I got BF2 for Christmas and it won't run on my computer. It's an AMD2.4 with an 80GB DMA Hard Drive, 128 meg video card, 512 Ram and a 52x32x52 cdrw drive. Those numbers don't mean anything to me but it locks up as soon as I start the game and if I look at the task manager it says " not responding ". Any ideas? Do I need a new computer or what? I don't know squat about computers so you have to explain it in idiot's terms. Thanks

First try to reinstall DirectX.

If that doesn't help, try to close any other applications you have open and see what happens. If that doesn't work, try to shut down as many items as you can on the traybar (down by the time). If it works then, then you know that one of those items are the culprit. Antivirus software can sometimes screw things up.

You need to list your graphics card, is it a Nvidia etc... or Ati etc...

If you've kept all your boxes and ****, the graphics card one should be the box with lots of pretty gay colours and a picture of some monster or something...

What "128 meg video card"?
128 megabytes ram, memory cards have their own memory independent of system memory. i use a BFG nvidia 6600GTOC with 128mb of ram.
** EDIT** never mind, i thougt you asked "what is 128meg "

Canadian Sig, it looks like your drivers for your graphics card needs updating. Find out the manufacturer of your card, and visit there website, locate the latest drivers for your card and you should be good to go.

Ok, you're gonna have to get a new one, 9800 at least ;)
Which AMD cpu do you have?
And 512 mb RAM isn't enough for BF2, you need at least 1gb.

Hawkeye
12-26-2005, 06:28 PM
you can play BF2 with 512mb RAM

yes, but either your framerate is <15 or it looks like **** if you have less than a gigabyte

no, I mean the processor, is it an athlon 64, athlon xp or sem****?

yes, it does a lot of changes and contains new stuff, weapons etc.

but a ati 9200se is pretty old and slow, so bf2 might not run at all on your machine.

Yes, the patch is 280mb. Also, I hope you're running XP, becuase I don't think it works with 2000 or anything less.

With the newest drivers and directx you should be fine, but don't expect the game to look like this (http://www.igrograd.com.ua/images/85-146/battle/2.jpg). You'll probably have to switch some of the good looking effects off in order to get it running properly.

-download the newest ati catalyst driver here (https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27) (-> "windows xp drivers" -> "RADEON" -> "catalyst 5.13").
But you have to have microsoft .net framework installed (download it here: click (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en))

-install directx 9.0c (if not installed already) click (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a9b6820-bfbb-4799-9908-d418cdeac197&DisplayLang=en)

the mininum requirements for BF2 is thus:

1.5 GHz processor
512MG RAM
Shader version 1.4 capable graphics card (ATI 9500 and above or nVidia 5200 and above).

And they are the bear minimum, as in....you really dont want that^

Your graphics card is I believe the problem, and thus BF2 will not run. If Im correct about this, then the cheapest solution would be to get a card called "6600GT" by nividia, offers good performance, and its cheap. Otherwise, BF2 is really going to either not run at all, or its going to run like ****.

Canadian Sig it is not your system. Follow my advice on the first page and see if that works, that is the most common solution with your problem.

I wouldn't invest too much money into new hardware for that PC because you wont be able to move it over to a new system in the future.

The newest videos cards are PCI Express instead of AGP now.
Your motherboard wont have a PCI express slot unfortunately.

Because the video card you are getting can't be moved to a new system, you should probably look for something under $150 and then look towards getting a new PC next Christmas.

I have a 128MB ATI 9700 pro and it plays Quake 4 and Doom 3 and could probably play BF2 at a low frame rate.

If you can get your hands on a used ATI 9800 pro from someone that should probably work.

Newegg has some 128MB 9800 pro cards for around $120-$130.

Maybe someone here using a card like that can chime in and let you know it that'll work well enough in BF2.

You can get a 6600GT AGP on newegg for just over $100. If you want to spend a little extra, there's an AGP version of the new 6800GS coming out next month, which supposed to be on par with a 6800GT but just under $200. I personally have had nothing but problems with ATI cards (I've tried them on and off for about 10 years now) so I'm a NVidia fan myself.

Yeh, get a 6600GT and another 512MB of RAM.

You'll want to get the same speed RAM you have already and you can determine that speed using CPU-Z which you can download at the link below:

http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

When you've downloaded it you simply run it, click on the memory tab and post what it says in the frequency box, we can then tell you what RAM to buy.

Note the video is essential but the RAM is not, although BF2 and other applications / games will run much, much better with the RAM too.

I play with Medium-High settings on a 128mb ATI 9800 Pro. If you bought one, it would get you buy on BF2, but the 9800 Pro is not going to handle new games for too much longer.

My RAM frequency says 136.3 MHz.

Go to Crucial's website and use their system scanner.

http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/

On the left hand side they’ll list the memory modules already in your system like:
Slot 1
512 MB
Non-parity DDR PC2700

And will let you know if the other slots are filled or not.

On the middle of the webpage they'll tell you what motherboard you have and they'll make a recommendation as to what memory you need, although they usually recommend something slower than what you can use.

Run their tool and post back the info to us.

Roy Batty
12-27-2005, 10:19 AM
Your computer currently has 512 MB of memory installed; and will support up to 3072 MB.

Slot 1
256 MB
Non-parity DDR PC2700

The Crucial System Scanner was unable to determine the exact VIA Technologies model that you have. You can still find the right memory upgrade for your VIA Technologies computer by using the Crucial Memory Advisor™ tool.

The disk with my computer says ATI Radeon 9200SE.
i was able to play BF2 on an ati 9200se, but you have to play it at the absolute lowest seting to get anywhere near 30fps. 9800pro is good start if you have good ventilation on your case because it runs hot.

Moledet

You need some major upgrades.
A new CPU, memory, motherboard and graphic card and probably a new power supply.

My recommendation:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 1GHz FSB Socket 939 Processor (around 160$).
OCZ Value Series 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 533 (PC2 4200) (around 70$).
ABIT KN8 Ultra Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard (around 90$).
SAPPHIRE Radeon X800GTO 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card (about 160$).

As for power supply, just buy a computer case with a 400W power supply, it will probably cost 40$ or if you are happy with your current cumputer case and it is big enough for this motherboard buy a Thermaltake TR2 W0070 430W Power Supply (40$).

BTW, I'm so Jewish :)

Well I just put in a new power supply a month or so ago so that is out. I did, however, pick up another 512MB of RAM today and an ATI RADEON X700 video card to go with it.....Total cost? about $360.00 (Cdn)
