This weapon might actually be a real prototype, even though a lot of people think it is just a prop. It is a modular weapon, has a plastic composite frame, is bullpup (for better accuracy), and has caseless ammuntion (which is probably the high Ignition Temperature Propellant ammo being tested). Most all of this, except maybe for the bullpup design, is something the military has been in favor of for quite a while now, especially for the OICW Increment 1 (which was actually suspended, but still favored by the DoD).

For more information, go to Cryeassociates.com, or go to www.dtic.mil/ndia/2005smallarms/wednesday/spiegel.pdf .

This also feautures the Lightweight Machine Gun and Ammunition program, which will suposively be demonstrated in 2007.

I don't any mention of a bull pup design.

Edit: Ok now I see it on the Crye website, but it looks totally different from the one in the pdf.

Then why do you list it as reference? BTW the OICW and OICW-1 were never designed to integrate a caseless ammunition weapon.

And it is not feasible thet Crye caseless carbine mock-up is more than just that: a mock-up. Crye Associates is mostly a design bureau, particularly for ergonomics and the usage of advanced materials. Most of their work centers around niche solutions and component improvement. The company just doesnt have the knowledge to design and produce a real weapon, which is different from the plastic and fabric products they usually design.

The only practical use for this mock-up would be to test different bull-pup ergonomics and weapon handling layouts, to gain knowledge for REAL future developments.

Maybe, that is a good point, and I am not saying it is functional. But that is probably what army officials and DoD officials had in mind at the design table when they were thinking of an idea for a future caseless ammunition weapon. This is simply probably a mock-up, but it is an idea and image of what the military wants for it's recquired needs.

Also, on the Modern Firearms website and elsewhere, states the XM25, XM8, and XM29 OICW (when 2 of them were still in development) have mock-up designs of what they might look like, and now they are being developed into full-blown programs. I am not saying this caseless carbine will for sure be the exact weapon that they will use, but is a image of what an OFW carbine might look like.
