Russian Patriarchate suspends relations with Church of Sweden

Moscow, December 27, Interfax - The Moscow Patriarchate has suspended relations with the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Sweden after it decided to establish an official ceremony on blessing homo****** couples.

"We have received with great disappointment and grief the news that not only does the Lutheran Church of Sweden not oppose so-called homo****** marriages, but has even ruled to establish an official blessing ceremony," Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church said in a statement at a session in Moscow on Tuesday.

The members of the Synod believe that the Church of Sweden's decision contradicts the Biblical concept of family and marriage "and the testimonies of the Holy Writing leave us no doubt that homo******ity is considered a sin and 'confusion'," the statement says.

"The Christian Church has always regarded a marriage between a man and a woman as one of the sacraments, because it is the union which gives birth to a new life," the statement says.

The attempts to break this tradition "and present perversions as a norm" are "an open resistance to God's will, violation of commandments of the Holy Writing and ancient Church traditions," the statement says.

The approval of homo****** marriages is a serious blow to the system of European spiritual and moral values "formed under the influence of Christianity," the statement said. "Such innovations undermine the moral basis of European civilization and inflict irreparable damage to its spiritual influence in the world," the statement said.

Here here.

It's one thing to promote gay marriage, which I have nothing against - they should have the same status under the law as any other marriage - but trying to do it under the guise of Christianity, which is pretty firmly against homo******ity, and pass it off as a theologically (or whatever, canonically) legitimate is quite another thing.

"He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision" (Psalm 2:4).

I see they have visited the royal castle in Stockholm as well.

I agree, people should be able to do what they want with their lives, but it's not really any matter for the church in either way, the Christian church is as obsolete as the pagan temples of the old Norse gods. If people want to be gay it's up to them, and the fundamentalists can't do anything about it either.

Casting around for the one true path in life, Christians often ask themselves: ‘WWJD?’ - ‘What would Jesus do?’ Apparently he wouldn’t make some stuff out of wood or cure the sick but spend his afternoons walking up and down the street with a big placard reading ‘GOD HATES FAGS’
Your average person flicking their way through the good book will find anti-gay sentiments hard to find.
The new testaments supposed ‘No To Homos’ message in Romans 1:26-27 boils down to Paul’s comments on the sins of the Gentiles and scholars are not at all at ease with the translation due to the many meanings of the Greek word [arsenokoites].

The Swedish church changed their protocol to let the decision be down to each individual priest, rather than supporting either a full ban or a full forced acceptance.

If the priest wanna marry two dudes. He may.
If the priest don't wanna marry two ugly women. He may opt out.

Russkies might not feel comfortable with a church that doesn't project a collective authorative force upon its members....

IIRC, the Leviticus (which BTW predates Jesus) also says it's okay to own/sell slaves, to punish any farmer who sows two different kinds of grain on adjacent fields, to stone unruly kids to death at the gates of the city, to expel from the community husbands who sleep with their wives while they are "impure", to punish whoever wears clothes made from different types of fabric...

People like the Westboro "church" crave to be the new Holier-than-thous Inquisitors these days. Judging other people (didn't Jesus say something about that, BTW ?) seem to be their main source of pleasure.

What a filthy, demented group of nutjobs...

If checking their site they protest at the funeral of American soldiers killed in Iraq, with signs like "God hit that fag soldier with the IED" and so forth, I can't think of any worse disrespect during a funeral for a fallen soldier than nutjob fellow countrymen like that. But I guess, it's a free country...

Didn't see anything in Swedish news about this with the Russian patriarchate breaking with the Swedish church by the way. From a Swedish point of view towards the Russians it seems to be a case of;

If Aftonbladet can be considered as "news" that is, a gossip tabloid that makes up everything they don't steal from other gossip papers and rewrite. I didn't see it on serious news sites like DN.se or SvD.se despite TT being the main source. But maybe some serious articles will appear there later.

who cares!

I mean really, who cares ... does it make you less of a christian if two guys get to marry eachother in church? I don't think so and if it does I wouldn't want to be one in the first place

in Holland we say, mind your own business, that's crazy enough

Yes, they sure do need some "theological debate", and a particular refresher course on the Gospel of the Knuckles Sandwich.

It sure is - free enough for grieving relatives to bloody the damn fools' noses a little bit. I'm sure if it had happened to them sooner or more often, some of these followers might have had a change of heart for the best.

What a filthy group of f***ers, praying for people suffering and rejoicing over the pain that'll come to others. I hope whoever is responsible for this sorry "Gospel" will get a good dose of his own poisonous medicine.
