West Bank bombing: First lieutenant Uri Binmo, 21, was killed and three other soldiers were wounded Thursday morning after a suicide bomber struck at an army roadblock near a West Bank village in the Tul Karem region.

Four Palestinians were also killed in the incident, including the bomber. Security authorities estimate the explosive device, which was particularly powerful, was designed to be used for an attack in Israel during Chanukah.

The troops who stopped the terrorist at the roadblock "prevented a serious attack on Israel's home-front with their bodies," Ephraim Brigade commander Aharon Haliva told Ynet later.

"We're trying to allow Palestinians not involved in terror to continue on with their lives, but this cannot be done as long as terror groups continue with their activity," he said. "We're greatly disappointed with Palestinian security organizations, which are not doing anything."

The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. Thursday, after a Palestinian cab approached a roadblock set up earlier by IDF troops deployed in the area following an intelligence tip.

The terrorist disembarked from the cab and spoke to one of the officers on the scene, who asked him to undo his jacked, prompting a giant explosion – the result of a 15-kilograms (33 pounds) explosive belt. The officer was killed instantly, as were the bomber and three other Palestinians. Army officials are looking into the identity of other passengers in the taxi and are estimating that one of them was tasked with leading the bomber to his destination.

One of the injured Israelis sustained serious wounds and was taken to hospital by helicopter. The two other Israeli bombing victims were lightly hurt and were also taken to hospital for treatment.

10 specific terror warnings

Security authorities deployed soldiers to perform spot checks after intelligence information indicated terrorists were planning to carry out an attack within the Green Line. Defense officials told Ynet a "highly specific" terror warning allowed troops to foil the planned attack. Currently, security forces are contending with 10 specific terror warnings and 49 general terror alerts.

Meanwhile, Palestinian security officials estimated the Islamic Jihad was behind the latest attack.

IDF forces were scouring the area in search of the terror cell behind the attack and imposed a closure on Tul Karem, Kalkiliya, and area villages.

Notably, for several weeks now, IDF forces have been operating against West Bank terrorists planning to carry out attacks in the northern West Bank and inside Israel.

Thursday's attack comes at a time where tensions have been building up at several fronts. Overnight, the IDF bombarded northern Gaza Strip targets in an effort to keep rocket launching cells away from the newly established buffer zone in the area.

Earlier, tensions flared on the northern border, with terrorists firing rockets at northern Israeli towns.

thats the way the media functions. Israel has almost thrown BBC out of the country for its bs reporting practices. Just a few days ago, they had a frontline story about IDF setting up fire zones and no-go zones in northern Gaza after Hamas lobbed a few dozen Kassams into Israel.

The bbc article did not mention as to why the zone was set up but concentrated entirely on how 'heavy handed' the IDF was being with local palestinians. the BS never stops.

Family mourns fallen son

Father of Uri Binamo, who was killed while confronting a suicide bomber en route to Israel, speaks of his son

Ahiya Raved

Family and friends of Uri Binamo, who was killed Thursday morning in a suicide bomb attack at the Tul Karm checkpoint, mourned the loss of their son and friend.

"This is a terrible way to be promoted. Uri was supposed to receive the rank of first lieutenant in two months time, and now he received it with his death. We never believed that's how it would happen," said Avi Binamo, father of First Lieutenant

According to the division's commander, Binamo and his soldiers, of the Nachshon Battalion, stood at a surprise checkpoint in the West Bank, and stopped a Palestinian taxi van carrying the bomber. The soldiers prevented, with their bodies, an attack within Israel.

"I'm so proud of this kid, so proud of his devotion. We lost a kid who gave his soul to this country," said his father.

Avi added that when his son was drafted into the army, Uri asked to serve in a combat unit, and has always aspired to be the best. "He surprised (everyone) with the level of his excellence, he had problems with his legs, but he couldn't leave his soldiers. He went with them to Eilat, to Jerusalem – everything to make sure they didn't have any problems at home. He really wanted to travel. Instead of going home on vacations he went to the homes of his soldiers."

The bereaved father said that this (Thursday) morning, while at work, he heard about the incident and began searching for information about his son. "He had two mobile phones, because we always wanted to keep in touch with him, but there was no answer in either. Afterwards his mother called me and said: 'Come home quickly.' It was then clear to me this couldn't be good news," he said.

"We as parents, as people from whom the country is sometimes more important than their private home, took this possibility into account," said Uri's father, in a broken voice.

'We love this land'

"We are a very Zionist family, we love this land, we were born to give to the State. I don't know how we, the parents, and Uri's family and friends, can continue now, without him," he added.

Uri's girlfriend, Einat Bing, recounted how she sat at the operations room of the Menashe division, when she heard on the radio communication about an attack resulting in a casualty and two injuries. "I called both of his mobile phones. We had a tradition, that after an attack he would call and say everything was alright, but this time he didn't. I started calling friends but I already knew, because when it hurts you realize it (without being told)."

Uri Binamo's funeral will take place Friday morning in the Haifa military cemetery. He left behind his parents, two sisters, and a brother. He was 21 years-old.

The guy was stopped from coming closer to the check point so when he exploded the bomb he must have known that other palestians would be hurt or killed, but apparently he didn't care. You would think there would be some outrage from the palestinians about their own being killed.
