View Full Version : Maroon beret - elite of Spetsnaz

Best of the best of spetsnaz each year have a try-out to obtain a maroon beret. The quest is difficult indeed.
You have to run for miles, crawl for some more miles, run in a gas mask, box with at least three counterparts-wearers of the beret and so many more tasks that only about 3-5 out of 150-170 spetsnaz soldiers each year receive the maroon beret.
I really have a few pictures and I would be very glad if 16 Obr Spn or Roman would contribute more pics to the topic.

Red beret test:
For every SPETSNAZ, the hardest and at the same time the most honorary qualifying test is the "Red Beret" complex. The requirements are same for all, despite age, rank or service achievements. The ?Red Beret¦ qualification has to be reconfirmed every year. In this contest, everybody is equal. The test consists of three stages.
The first one serves to display physical fitness: eight kilometers of cross-country race are followed by a 100-meter sprint. Most part of the distance is either "fording" a swamp, breast-deep of foul water, or crossing a "contaminated zone" with a gas mask on. To add to the difficulties, the contaminated zone has a few "special tracks" with land mines, smoke and fire. In certain parts of special tracks, a soldier has to run through smoke and fire, with heavy truck tires swinging like pendulums, hitting soldier-s heads, hands, legs or sides. From time to time they run or crawl under real gunfire. To worsen the situation, special groups of "psychological enhancement" create additional obstacles. The ?psyches¦ run in parallel to contestants and shout, and spray them with mud or throw pyrotechnical packets under feet- These are the caste of the ?untouchable¦ - a contestant is not allowed to argue with them, let alone exercise physical force on them. This part over, without a break, a man has to run another set of sprint distances: 4 x 100 meters. Then come pull-ups and acrobatics. Only "excellent" marks are counted.
The second phase begins immediately after the first one. Every contestant has to excellently fire the RPG-7 anti-tank grenade launcher, the AGS-17 automatic grenade launcher, the PK and PKT machine guns, the AK-74M assault rifle, the Stechkin and Makarov pistols and the SVD rifle. When firing the Dragunov sniper rifle equipped with the unadjusted scope, a shooter has to fire two test shoots and be able to zero the rifle for both windage and elevation. By the next two series of two shots each a sniper has to "kill" two targets at extended ranges. Tired and exhausted, a contestant receives a command "Assault! Hostages in the center (to your left or to your right)". Performing a "dynamic entry", with 4 shots from a pistol, a soldier has to remove 2 targets.
Finally, cadets approach a table with a knocked down radio station and quickly put it into operation, establish communications with the HQ and report that the mission is in progress.
The third stage is probably the toughest. It lasts only 12 minutes, but cadets call this test "12 minutes of hell". The 12 minutes are divided into 4 periods of 3 minutes each. This is exactly the duration of a round in a hand-to-hand fight. Every new round - with a new competitor, the competitor, who is a certified Red Beret. In this fight there are very few taboos:
- do not hit groin;
- do not hit back with elbow;
- do not hit elbows with straight leg.
The rest of the fight has no limits.
;)

Great pics Sergei woot
Anyway I'd like to ask if that red/white "tielniaszka" stripes are associated with specs? I know there are also blue/white, black/wihite, darkblue/white variants... Most of them I've seen worn by almost any law enforcement/military in Russia - but its a first time I see a red one on a soldier

It's quite sad to see such a great army with such a proud heritage copying other armies.
-Red beret (UK origin)
-DPM pattern camouflage(UK origin)
-"Special Forces" tab (in English !!!!)
I prefered the VDV with blue berets and traditional russian uniforms, not foreign inspired uniforms and badges.

Well since there are only 7 colors in the rainbow
Yellow is out
Pink well duh
Blue - VDV, taken
Green - already taken by US and 400 other armies
Red - looks good.
Since USSR adopted the Red Berets before the collapse, I must say its our right to do so. Communism was way before SAS, and it happens that red was Communists favorite color.
Sorry to ruin your wishes, we didn't use British SAS as an inspiration.

Purple: Givati Brigade, Israel
Grey: IDF engineers
Pink: Oman's Sultan Special forces
Orange: East German paratroopers and some Indonesian SF
Adopting the red beret is a step towards a uniformized world...next think you'll drop Vodka for Whisky and Piroshki for Mc Donalds...
BTW, the first French parachute instructors commanded by Captain Fred Geille were trained with the Russians in Russia in 1935.
we didn't use British SAS as an inspiration.
No, the Rangers already did...after the Land rovers and the Carl Gustav rocket launchers (sorry, the RSOV and the RAW...), they just HAD to choose the same beret as the SAS...pure coincidence I am sure...NOT.

It seems so... sadly but yes.
Just to add a word - dont be fooled by apperance Stg44/MP43 only looks familiar (curved mag, gas pipe, pistol grip) but acts on other system as AK and clones. Its far more delicate, complicated and harder to field strip and so...all those aspects which im my opinion make an AK and its clones great field weapon.

Some controversy about it. Also i don't suppose he could try to claim German design as its own. During Stalin times he could face real problems with that. This means he really invented something (even if it was inspired by MP43). I read articles about it but too long ago - don't remember details.

Right, the machine-gun is the first weapon to be identified and spotted during combat as it is providing constant suppresive fire. This is just an attempt to conceal the machine-gun operator.
Also interesting, the Special Forces tab on the right shoulder of the soldiers uniform. It is in English? Why not Cyrillc?
This is because of the non-conformity of uniforms and lack of standard special wear and camo for all soldiers in the unit. Some of them had to buy those camo's intended for some NATO forces probably, my guess.
