DALLAS (*******) - A vegetarian group wants an Oklahoma town named after a family that helped settle the state to change its name to Veggieville because they think its sounds a lot better than Slaughterville.
The city council of Slaughterville, Oklahoma, a town of about 3,000 in the center of the state, was due to discuss next week the proposal by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
PETA is even offering $20,000 worth of veggie burgers to an area school if the name change goes through.
But town manager Marsha Blair said on Friday the chances of passage were slim to none. "We do not intend to change the name," she told *******.
Bruce Friedrich, PETA's campaign manager, said the organization is focusing its resources on the abuse and cruelty of animals that are killed for the food and clothing industries in slaughterhouses.
"Even if the people of Slaughterville are not looking at the cruelty to farmed animals as an issue, it is a fact that anyone, including the residents of Slaughterville, who is eating meat, is supporting the felony level of abuse of animals," he said.
Slaughterville was named after a family that helped settle the area in the 19th century. The family ran a dry goods store and blacksmith shop.

Who the hell actually eats veggie burgers? I can barely stomach a steamed carrot let alone a burger that's not made of beef.
blaah! Screw PETA and their stupid ideas.

I tried once a Veggie Burger, and I didn't like it at all. A friend of mine is a veggie, she uses to eat a salad while I'm having a steak, she thinks that meat is murder.Incredible.!!!!
BTW
Veggie Burgers
2 cups oats
2 egg whites
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup water sprinkle of garlic powder
sprinkle of dried onions

here i go on another "liberal" rant:
this argument was valid when men hunted mammoths for supper, but "god" forbid humanity should evolve beyond its primitive ways, right?
aside from the well-documented environmental, social, ethical, and economic benefits of vegetarianism/veganism, why would anyone want to eat the flesh of another living creature? in this day and age, eating meat is just plain selfish and idiotic, to put it mildly, for the aforementioned reasons (environment, social, etc.)
on a side note, although i support peta, the organisation often engages in ridiculous activities. in cases such as the one mentioned, i am left scratching my head wondering what the heck peta is up to...
Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet.
--Albert Einstein (1879-1955)
People often say that humans have always eaten animals, as if this is a justification for continuing the practice. According to this logic, we should not try to prevent people from murdering other people, since this has also been done since the earliest of times.
--Isaac Bashevis Singer (1904- )
"As long as there are slaughterhouses, there will be battlefields."
--Leo Tolstoy, author
For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.
--Pythagoras (6th century BC)
I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men.
--Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519)
Now I can look at you in peace; I don't eat you anymore.
--Franz Kafka (novelist)
Not to hurt our humble brethren (the animals) is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission--to be of service to them whenever they require it... If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.
--Saint Francis of Assisi (mystic and preacher)
"In all the round world of utopia there is no meat. There used to be. But now we cannot stand the thought of slaughterhouses. And in a population that is all educated and at about the same level of physical refinement, it is practically impossible to find anyone who will hew a dead ox or pig. We never settled the hygienic aspect of meat-eating at all. This other aspect decided us. I can still remember as a boy the rejoicings over the closing of the last slaughterhouse."

I won't call you idiotic for your food choices, and I'd appreciate it if you didn't call me selfish and idiotic for mine. If you truly want to have an intellectual conversation, let's go. I'll put my intelligence up against yours any day of the week. However, since you are so fond of quoting others to make your points, I'll leave you with a quote.
"Preach not to others what they should eat, but eat as becomes you, and be silent."

The humankind has always ate meat. We have evolved ( well, sometimes counter evolved) as omnivores it's been always that way. And as somebody pointed before, animals are made of meat.
All this talk bout meat is making me hungry :(

Yum yum yum yum.
Until the Star-Trek food materialization machine is invented I'm going to be ordering more bacon (and justifying it by claiming some one else was going to eat it anyway).

there's something a bit dim about using corn and wheat to feed cows to make beef same as farming fish fed on ground up little fish.
sheep grown on mountain sides are enviormnetaly friendly you can raise sheep on land thats bugger all use for anything else
Vegetarian does not equate to liberalism. Jeez. Evena lot of liberals think vegeterians are stupid! C'mon!
About the the feed thing, Farmgirl can elaborate, but that is common practice to feed cows whatever is left from a cow slaughter all ground up. That is how mad cow got around. Now they leave out the skull and other parts that could contain the virus, but dairy cows still eat ground cow remains (called meal?) as a supplemet to grain. Lots of protein.

Venison is very high in protein and low in fat. Just sayin.
True for beef cows on the grazing, but for dairy cows they usually don't even leave the barn on a regular basis. Beef cows get outside and all. That deal about the "meal" was widely reported when that Holstein got mad cow in Washington.

If eating all veggies were so damn great the rabbit would be king of the jungle.
I can respect the vegitarian dieters as well as the strict Vegans, I can let them eat in peace, I can appreciate their decision, but why is it that they feel I "need" to be converted.
If they are so damn worried about my eating a steak, they should just give themselves up "Soylent Green" style or live their own life whilst i live mine. The most militant are the Fruitarians that will only eat stuff after it falls from the plant. or the Raw only Vegans.
Enjoy that Broccili buddy.
Im going to cook up a steak and shrimp right now.

Which brigns us to an old mystery of life:
What was the first person to milk a cow thinking when he started squeezing those nipples?
