I have a sort of silly question I guess. What does a basic infantry soldier (e1-e4) do on a day to day basis when in times of peace? I understand they must have to train quite frequently, but I would just like to know what happens on a typical day on a typical U.S. base with an infantry "grunt."
Thanks

1. Company level physical training formation.
1. Perform physical training with his unit
2. Do personal hygenine
3. Go to breakfast
4. Possible company accountability formation.
5. Perform whatever task his NCO has scheduled for the day. (unit training, weapons/vehicle maintenance, etc.)
6. Go to lunch
7. Perform whatever task his NCO has scheduled for the afternoon.
8. Possible final company formation.
9. Soldier released for the day.
10. Go to dinner.
This is a very loose definition of a typical barracks day, sometimes there isn't a formation and what a soldier does on a daily basis could be vary a lot, but the physical training and chow times are steady for the barracks life. Of course when he's in the field or some major training event this schedule wouldn't apply.

Rake leaves, post support, pick up pine cones, do guard duty and since there is no more KP, ghost when not training. Also, no more painting of coal bins.

Well there is always the 1SG's fence, the rocks, lines in the parking lot, and the hallways to paint. If you don't get to paint something as an E-4 and bellow something's wrong.
A typical workday, Monday-Friday, means waking up about ten minutes before first formation, 0600-0630 depending, popping a couple of tylenols to try and kill the hangover from all the cheap beer you drank at the ***** bar last night, pulling on your PT clothes and stumbling down to formation just in time for your PSG or squad leader( a good SQD LDR will have been out drinking with you last night)to chew your ass and tell you for the 1,000 time about how showing up early for formation builds character and will get you to E-5 quicker. You do PT for about an hour and hopefully blow chunks to really clear your head for the rest of the day. You go back to the barracks and take a quick nap for 15 minutes before rushing to the shower. SSS (sh*t, shower, shave) and off to the mess hall for some SOS and OJ. Run back to the barracks and maybe straighten the room up if you think there might be an inspection, help out on whatever cleaning detail you have (sweep mop buff floors, clean latrine) and then out for second formation at 0900. Listen tot he 1SG go on an on about whatever BS you have to do today and how giving to CFC, AER, or AUSA will make you a better soldier and how the upcoming Soldier of the Month Board will also improve you and then it's off for training or maintenance. If you have a really sick unit you have another formation at 1130 to make sure no one is cutting out early for chow. Lunch is from 1130-1300 and is not a bad deal. You can get in a decent nap if you eat quick(this will catch you up on your sleep and allow for another night on the town). 1300 formation starts the afternoon festivities out right. At 1630 to 1700 is final formation and you listen for a final time from the 1SG about whatever you f*cked up today and what needs cleaning and how disapointed he is about the state of the barracks. He invites you to a party, a GI party in the barracks from 1800 UTC. You go to chow at 1700 and get ready for the 1SG's party. Strangly enough he doesn't attend but your Squad Leader does and he is pissed that you've taken up his time with your sloppy barracks maintenance. During the "party" someone starts bringing out some beer and things get a little more festive. This all leads into another shower and getting ready for a night out on the town. Last night was ***** bar, this night, menopause lounge night. Maybe you'll get lucky with some 40 year old who has her own apartment and car, BONUS!

That's a lot of formations and details. It was only like that when someone was a troublemaker or during red duty cycle. When you are the newest, lowest ranking private, plan on getting every single detail there is. I know I was getting fed up with it, but eventually a newer private will arrive to take your place and you're pretty much free. Just do what you're told and do your best and things will go easy for you. The guys that have trouble with PT, late to formations, etc. Get all of these extra details. I've been in theinfantry for years and we only had morning PT, accountability and sometimes the final formation. None of my units had afternoon formations. That's funny about the cheap beer and power naps, I remember all of the long runs in the mornings with a hangover, LOL.

What's this lawn of which you speak?
We got to white-wash rocks every so foten and then put them in pretty circles around things. What I always wanted to know was, was there an alternative basic-training group who cleaned the rocks and put them back in random order in the fields? 40 years of the IDF with 2-3 intakes per year shpuld have used up all the available rocks for that kind of stuff.
