A 50-year-old Latvian man was found dead on a street near his home after being run over by a car near the capital Riga. He was found to have a blood alcohol level 17 times over the legal drink-driving limit in the country and about twice the lethal limit, police said.
The man must have been drinking some kind of homemade alcohol to reach that level, ShortNews.Com website quoted the police as saying. He could have been drinking it for several days.
However, the Latvian was alive when he was run over by a car, creating a probable although unenviable record for alcohol consumption in hard-drinking Latvia, ******* reported. “The cause of death has been marked down as a road accident, although the alcohol level would most likely have killed him anyway,” said state police spokeswoman Kristine Mezaraupe.
Many Latvian men do have a problem with alcohol. While life expectancy for women is 77 years, the one for men is only 66 in this former soviet republic, which is one of the poorest countries in today’s European Union.

Ban it? Because of the 1930's alcohol ban in the US, the Mafia became extremely powerful.
I am not saying to ban it. The best cure is family. If there is an understanding within families, then it will help. But unfortuantely, unemployment, poverty, social isolation are alcohol's allies.

how do you know??? The article only says "17 times over the legal drink-driving limit in the country (Latvia)". What drink-driving limit do they have in Latvia and what is considered lethal? This article is worthless without numbers. p-)

I assumed it was .08, I think that's pretty much standard around the world. I think a .40 - .50 is a coma/death so it's about right.

On the flip side, sometimes it's family that cause people to drink...

Drinking and cigars go hand in hand like a P&J sammich ;)
But, I won't force my vices on others. More alcohol for me!
