Sweet pics. Still don't see how that thing is replacing our MBTs though. :( Thanks for posting.

What really bugs me about it is all that dead space in the troop compartment. The MGS carries only 18 rounds of 105mm ammo - with all that empty space I think you could fit in a good 20-30 extra rounds with racks and blowout panels. Maybe they kept it down because of that weight limit?

That does seem to be alot of wasted space. I'm sure the crew will love it though. They will have tons of room for their pers kit. 18 rounds is a rediculously low ammo count to carry into battle. They won't be able to move without an ammo truck following behind them.

The other thing that doesn't jive with me is the VC's .50cal - it can't fire over half the turret. Aside from the MGS, I really like Strykers. I hope the MGS gets a bit of an overhaul before they go into full production on it.

i read something on the interenet (this is usually bad) about this combat vehicle being part of a larger makeover of the armed forces. The reason for the low ammo count being, if the MGS gets to the point where it meets stiff resistance that would take more than 18 rounds, apaches, f-35's, UAVs and such would be called in to crater the opposition. I think what they are trying to do is be more mobile on the ground, while transferring a greater amount of their firepower to the air for maximum coverage over an operational area.

That does make sense from an operational level. It's much faster to redeploy air assets, as long as conditions will allow. And with British mobile GPS guided artillery on the horizon, that kind of accurate firepower should be in the army's hands soon.
But I'd still want overwhelming firepower at my fingers and as much armour protecting me as possible while sitting there in the vehicle with an enemy tank nearby. :)

Add to that the fact that we have no fr$%$ing air assets and you get a formula for a sh!t sandwich...

hell right now they ATGMs that the MGS platoon use roll out with 8 TOW IIs.
overall, SBCTs are light units. we're not made to go fight off armor regiments rolling along in the desert...we're made for the light fight, specifically urban.
oh and that weight restriction they put out back when they were designing these things, that was to avoid a repeat of the insanity that was the bradley fighting vehicle design. everyone kept slapping **** on that vehicle til it was 60 tons of junk. go check out the prototype at Ft Knox sometime. that weight restriction helped avoid a lot of that BS, and gave us one helluva vehicle in record time. very glad i went into combat in a stryker

That space is there for safety reasons, as far as I know. Crews cluttering it up with gear and extra ammo will probably prove a problem.

While I realise that the book may say that, the fact of the matter is that the space will be used for pers kit. You can hand soldiers a zillion rules about their vehicles but once they head to the field the wheels are theirs and they outfit them as they like. Trust me; my rad truck has a George Forman grill, a PS2, a TV,a kettle big enough to heat IMPs in and a coffee maker.

the new auto loader is to cope with the problem the first test systems had that when you took the muzzle break off the gun the breach would slam into the loader damaging it and with the muzzle break you cant have troops around the sides of it cuz of the break flash...or behind it cuz you would get a 30lb casing in your face

I did that when I was in the mechanized battalion. maybe not THAT far, only because the lav had some of that stuff in it already hehe.
yeah you know they'll be shoving a tv in there somewhere. no doubt about it. I was using the speaker system in the lav as a boom box before :D
