SWC CONDEMNS ANTISEMITIC STATEMENTS BY VENEZUELAN PRESIDENT HUGO CHAVEZ – DEMANDS PUBLIC APOLOGY

The Simon Wiesenthal Center strongly condemned antisemitc statements by the President of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez Frías, who had said that “the world has wealth for all, but some minorities, the descendants of the same people that crucified Christ, have taken over all the wealth of the world”. Chávez made this statements during a celebration of Christmas, last Dec. 24, at a rehabilitation center.

In a letter to Chávez, Shimon Samuels (Director for International Relations of the SWC) and Sergio Widder (Latin American Representative), stated that “in your words we find two central arguments of antisemitism: the canard of the deicide and the association of Jews with wealth. Both elements have been the perfect excuse to justify persecution and murder of Jews along two millenia.

The letter adds that “it is paradoxical that the president of the country which will soon host the most renowned meeting of progressive thinking, the World Social Forum, uses this medieval and reactionary language. Your words sound very similar to those by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad when he denied the Holocaust, thus causing the rejection of the overwhelming majority of the international community”.

“Our Center condemns your antisemitic statements. Such offense to universal humanistic values demands an immediate and public apology. Your silence can only be interpreted as a reaffirmation of a racist conception”, the letter concludes.

Samuels and Widder added that “the Center will call on governments of Argentina, Brasil, Paraguay and Uruguay, as well as on the Presidency of MERCOSUR (South American Common Market), to freeze the process of incorporation of Venezuela to this bloc until Chávez makes a public apology for his antisemitic statements.

For further information, please contact Sergio Widder at + 5411 4313-4743 or + 54911 4425-1306

The Simon Wiesenthal Center is one of the largest international Jewish human rights organizations with over 400,000 member families in the United States. It is an NGO at international agencies including the United Nations, UNESCO, the OSCE, and the OAS.

Have googled a bit on the quote. loks like a quote out of contect och missinterpreted.
http://www.ww4report.com/node/1426
here is tha transcript in spanish
http://www.gobiernoenlinea.gob.ve/docMgr/sharedfiles/Chavez_visita_Centro_Manantial_de_los_suenos24122005.pdf

here is the babelfish interpretation of the relevant part.

"The world has enough for all, but a minority, the descendants of those who crucified Christ, the descendants of those who cast out Bolivar from here and also crucified him in a way in Santa Marta, over in Colombia--a minority has appropriated the riches of the world, a minority has appropriated the gold of the planet, the silver, minerals, water, good earth, petroleum, wealth, and has concentrated it in a small number of hands."

It seems as the quote is not against jews but against capitalists. This would also fit better with chaves MO.

So I'l file this under "learn to read and stop beeing twats"

Thank you caridon. Many people would have taken it at face value, myself included, if I had just read the single quote. Considering Chavez, capitalists makes more sense than Jews.

I'm sure the media will still pick it up and run with it. Headlines read: "Chavez is next Hitler".

Romans did. they were the Capitalist/imperialists of their age.
You can find out about them in any decent history book :)

To the person giving me bad rep for the earlier post:
get a backbone and argue with me instead of using the cowards way.

And was it the Jews that "cast Bolivar from here"? Enlighten me.

As someone said, Romans were "the man" of their day, the central authorities who held all the power. So it makes sense. I've Googled Santa Marta, Colombia but found nothing noteworthy, so I have no idea about what else he was reffering to.

It realy doesn't matter how you white wash what he said. You you can
claim that Arabs are also Semites and other crap of this sort.
You know and i know who he ment. There always is and there always will
be a didctator that will blame his countries misfortunes on that small
group that controls all the gold, wealth and run the world with global
conspiracies.

This is an exelent example on not having a resonable argument and ignoring facts. Neither you nor i can know what he meant, we can only know what he said, and we can only judge based on what we know.

Anything else is a whitch-trial.

And so, according to you, the SWC made the same mistake that is allegedly being made in this thread. That is, an organization as the SWC misinterpreted what Chavez said or worse, manipulated his words?

Explain.

Can't we just agree that Chavez is a goon, a clown, and a dinosaur without throwing the anti-semite label around.

When Longinus stuck the spear in the side of Jesus, Jesus was already dead.

Gospel of John, ch19
28: After this Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfil the scripture), "I thirst."
29: A bowl full of vinegar stood there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop and held it to his mouth.
30: When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished"; and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
31: Since it was the day of Preparation, in order to prevent the bodies from remaining on the cross on the sabbath (for that sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
32: So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him;
33: but when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
34: But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water.
35: He who saw it has borne witness -- his testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth -- that you also may believe.
36: For these things took place that the scripture might be fulfilled, "Not a bone of him shall be broken."

...

It wasn't the Romans that the Gospel of John talks about... the Gospel of John specifically says "the Jews" over and over.

Confused/stupid Christians take the literal words in the Gospel of John, and blame Jews for killing Christ. This was part of the whole scandal regarding Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ (which used the Gospel of John as a source). There is no historical blame of the Romans for Christ's death... it's linked to the Jews through the Gospel of John. This is one of the (stupid ass) reasons for the killing of Jews in Europe throughout history.

That being said... Jesus wasn't killed because of the Jews. Jesus' sacrifice was because of the collective sins of mankind in fulfillment of the scriptures... and Jesus' death has nothing to do with the specific sins of the Pharisees.

This is where stupid/confused Christians forget the whole point about original sin & Jesus' death/resurrection as redemption for their own stupid ass sins. (Also, stupid/confused anti-Christians point to the literal word of the Gospel of John (and movies like Gibson's Passion of the Christ) and say that Christians are anti-Semitic... but that's not the point. Too many people don't understand the Gospel of John & the story of Jesus with relation to the prophecy of Isaiah about the Messiach)

I wouldn't be surprised if Chavez is in the stupid ass Christian camp. He's clearly bringing up anti-Jewish junk there.

Jews have been scapegoated under communism for years and chavez being the textbook red is just reading out gospel. Soon enough he'll call them rootless cosmipolitians or some other predictable crap like that.
