Im currently in the process of choosing a new civilian utility shotgun to purchase. I have looked at various models and am currently leaning towards the Remington 870 Marine Magnum.

I have started collecting military/LE style firearms and am looking into this gun. please post any comments on it if you have used or own this gun, or if you have a recommendation for another gun like it. thanks

I've got an older Wingmaster that I tacticalized. Put thousands of rounds (probably) through it. Has been buried in sand many many times. Works awesome, makes holes in things.

If you are looking to make it a bit more "defensive", the Surefire rail system is $120, and well worth it. I can empty the 8 rounds outta this mag in about 2 seconds, if that kinda stuff floats your boat. Either way, having a vert grip helps in controlling recoil, and a light is always handy so you know what you're pointing your boomstick at if you hear a bump downstairs at 3 in the morning.

Excellent shotgun.

as far as handling and accuracy goes, how do you find the pistol grip fares opposed to a regular stock?

870 series are mighty fine scatterguns. I've shot a few and loved them- they can take a battering and keep on ticking as Skorotsnoy says <altho he does seem to have an unhealthy fascination with burying small arms in sand... ;-) >.

The Marine Magnum looks sweet part. with the extended mag- what's that- eight or nine rounds?

The pistol grip helps me alot. With the vert grip up front, your arms are in a comfortable position that really helps knock out recoil. I've got a video somewhere of myself putting a buncha 00 and 000 buckshot (7-8 rounds) downrange as fast as I can pump. I'll post it. It really works great for controlling recoil.

It's alot better than a straight stock in my opinion. Many others don't agree, but that's their opinion. Plus, when carrying your weapon at the low-ready on a "long walk", the pistol grip keeps your wrist from getting f*cked up. More comfortable.

Chops: I do that to almost all of my guns. Gotta make sure it can go bang where I go boom. :)

ok cool, i know i can pick up a pistol grip for the marine magnum, or even a regular stock+pistol grip so ill have to give one a go.

Stay away from Advanced Technologies products. No offense to them, I'm sure they are nice people, but their products are not durable unless you leave it in the closet, never to be shot.

I've got a Choate folding stock on that shotgun, and it's held up great.

Heres some info on the 870 as used by the Canadian Forces. Great scatter-gun, a pleasure to shoot.

Rem 870 is an awesome shotgun. I had a Wingmaster 12g that I put a folder and flashlight on. I took it to the range alot. I shot mostly slugs, it kicked like a pissed of mule, but I was putting holes in holes that I had just made at about 30 yards with a little adjustment of the rear sight. When I shot it at the local indoor range, every one stopped shooting and stared at me with their mouths open after my first shot. The guy next to me said, " damn, that thing is loud!" I wish I still had it, but somebody broke into my old apartment and stole it. I say you go with the 870.

I just bought a new Defender 1300 with a pistol grip. I was thinking of getting 870 but the 1300 pump + the speedloader are why I went with it. Plus the weight difference is somewhat there but overall the same gun...compare chevy to a ford.

personally I would have gone with a mossberg 500 series..
If you want the look..then get the Mesa Tactical ar stock setup..it's worth it.
The surefire rail is worth every single penny..or you could go with a dedicated surefire forend also.
