Lutefisk (****ounced /lutəfisk/ in Norway and the United States, /luːtfɪsk/ in Sweden) is a traditional food of the Nordic countries made from stockfish (air-dried whitefish) and lye (lut). In Finland the same dish is known as lipeäkala.
Not sure exactly what it is in details haha, got this from wikipedia, all I know is it stinks something awful.

No it doesn't stink. Not after cooking it anyway.
the lye is used to 'de-dry' it and then it's rinsed a few times to get the lye out. then cooked like any white fish (cod)... typically with sauce and potatoes
There's other smelly food though... like the infamous swedish fermented herring p-)

I say it smells. Never had been by fermented herring, I should be thankful.
I don't know what this other thing is maybe being on that side of the lake you can help.
It's like a potato bread in the shape of a tortilla and has butter and sugar and sometimes syrups on it, man is it good. Not sure the name.

Maybe about as big as a pie, as thick as maybe 10 peices of paper.

As do I, it does not smell that bad after you cooked it but the smell is still there. However it does not taste that bad (especially if the sauce is good).
That fermented herring is god-awful though, and I ain't making that mistake again, no matter how much snaps I drink ;).
Pickled on the other hand herring is great.

Crinkler,
You can buy just the lefse here:
http://www.nordichouse.com/detail.aspx?ID=65
You soak this in water to make it soft, and then add the sugar, butter, cinnamon or whatever you want. Yummy!!!!!
