TORONTO - A U.S. soldier who is absent without leave is seeking refugee status in Canada as a conscientious objector.

Jeremy Hinzman, who faces prosecution in the U.S., left the 82nd Airborne Division in North Carolina last month and fled to Toronto with his wife and baby.

Hinzman told the Fayetteville Observer in a phone interview that he had "a romantic vision" of the army when he joined three years ago.

He said the structure of army life, complete with subsidized housing, groceries and money for education, appealed to him.

FROM DISCLOSURE: AWOL in America

But at the start of basic training, he became disillusioned and horrified by chanting about killing during marches, shooting at targets without faces and the dehumanization of the enemy.

Hinzman applied as a conscientious objector, saying he wanted to fulfil his service obligation but not fight in combat.

His application was rejected while he was in Afghanistan.

Hinzman said he and his wife decided to flee to Toronto before he could be shipped off to Iraq.

Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board said none of the 268 American applicants for refugee status last year were accepted.

Sgt. Pam Smith, a spokesperson for the 82nd Airborne based at Fort Bragg, N.C., said Hinzman could be arrested in the U.S., and would be put on a national database.

But she said the army won't search him out.

"We don't have time to go and track down people who go [absent without leave]," she said. "We're fighting a war."

Haha, he doesn't want to fight but he signed up for Airborne Infantry? That must have been some very fancy footwork on the part of the recruiter.

I have the same opinion that I had on the last thread about this subject...I hope we (the US gov't) go into America Jr., oops I mean canada, get him, bring him down to Cuba and execute the service dedging bitch. If I remember the article on Armytimes.com correctly, Cowardice IS a charge that is punishible by death.....Actually I think blowing him up with an IED would be a great way to kill him...all those brave souls who fought for freedom in Iraq and died faced their fears and died to protect the idea of freedom, which they volunteeded to do. What I mean is that he should face the fate that he was too much of a pussy to face up too, even after he volunteered :fork: :fork:

When you volunteer you agree to a contract, that the time you signed up for you have to go fight where the Government sends you.

If he doesn't want to fight he shouldn't have joined in the first place.

Canada is hardly free, they stoped a bunch of pamphlets because they supported Israel.

The only lawful purpose of Government is to protect us from Force and Fraud, anything beyond this an unlawful and immoral Government.

To bad the US is heading down the same pathetic path as Canada.

memphiz...your argument dosen't make much sense...as I stated in my post, which obviously wasn't read, this soldier in question was a volunteer. that is why he should be tried for cowardice and executed, he volunteered, first for the Army, then for Airborne, so in fact he was a duble volunteer. Once he made that choice he couldn't go back on it....If my typing is bad it's because im a dumbass and spilled on my keyboard, so it's messed up

I will bet another case of Canadian beer that he gets hard time in Ft. Leavenworth.I hope you are right. It would be a shamefull precedent to harbour a volounteer deserter. This guy is not a "conscientious objector." He is a slacker, who thought he found "easy street" and does not want to pay now that the price has come due.

(note: acknowldge that being infantry is not easy, but for many it is much more bearable/enjoyable than living in an office cubicle)

Joining the the Airborne Infantry and not wanting to fight is like joining the SEALs and saying that I dont want to get in the water or joining the Navy but I dont want to be on a ship. I want to be Airborne but I dont want to Jump out of planes.

i knew he was a volunteer. but once he relized that he could go to war and die, he probly became a wreck..

-would you rather fight with a soldier who is confident in his training and skills that will kill an enemy before he kills you or him.
-or would you want to fight with a soldier who cant handle a high stressed enviroment, or fire his weapon at a person.

im glad he left when he did, if not he could've been in Iraq, and seen an enemy coming to ambush him and fellow soldiers ,and be too afraid to fire his weapon at the enemy or tell someone, causing the death of him and other soldiers.
