I know some of you don't know this but Brazil sent 25,000 man to fight in Italy during wolrd war 2 along with the alies.

Today we celebrate the 59th aniversary of the Monte Castelo liberation. One of the key battles that the army took part.

Nazis were kicked out of Monte Castelo by the Brazilian 1st Expeditionary Infantry Division and the US 10th Mountain Division.

Brazil was a huge player during WWII, and most people never hear about it. For a short period in the post-war situation they were up for a security coucil seat in the UN. Would be interesting to see how events would've played out with the UN run by the US, Britain, France, the Soviets/Russia...and Brazil...

Odd. I can't remember when Brazil got it's 'Independence' from Portugal, but you would think they would be tied up in Portugals affairs during WW2.

I was rennovating this old house, and I lifted up the attic floorboards and found an old newspaper from world war 2, one of the articles was about Brazillian troops in Italy.

damn most pics didn't work... freaking geocities and terra!

Anyway it's just cool to remember these soldiers. There training as very poor and they had to learn it the hard way. I read about this platoon that got attacked by german mortar fire in the open, instead of dispersing they just stuck together and were massacred.

The fighter groups on the other hand had the best training available in Panama.

Dec. 1, 1822 (if my facts are correct). Plenty of time to separate themselves from their former parent nation. Although people use the comparison of the US and Britain to illustrate the connection between Portugal and Brazil in reality the political connection is not that strong, maybe culturally however.

Ah yes, that seems plenty of time then. They'd already had well over a hundred years.

Yes does seem odd they are not mentioned more though. Granted 25,000 men doesn't seem like a lot in contrast to other nations (no disrespect of course).
