German secret service issues passports for Mossad

Germany's BND foreign intelligence agency has issued German passports for Israel's Mossad secret service, the daily Koelner Stadt-Anzeiger quoted a former high-ranking BND member as saying on Saturday.

According to the official, Mossad agents are using German passports during their covert operations in Middle Eastern countries.

Reacting to the news report, an unidentified BND spokesman said, "Of course we also have a cooperation with Mossad. However we commenting on any documents which might have been forwarded."

The number of issued German passports for Mossad operatives has reportedly increased dramatically since September 11, 2001.

Mossad used also passports from Canada and New Zealand in the 1990s.

Hmm, I have to say that I'm not too happy about that.

One of my former class-mates who is a Ukrainian Jew and who migrated to Germany in the early 90s once told me a funny story:
While he was on vacation in Israel he somehow accidentally managed to end up in some Palestinian-controlled area. He was there stopped by some militias since he obviously was not Arab.
He told me that they acted very aggressive, started shouting at him and stuff and he didn't know what to do because he didn't understand them.
So he got out his German passport and showed it to them and all of a sudden the militia-men became very friendly and helpful. They even showed him how to get back to the Israeli-controlled area.

Can't remember all the details since it's quite a while ago and I didn't really listen but I remember that the point of his story was that he thought that it was the German passport that saved him from some unfriendly treatment.

So if it now becomes public that there are a lot of Mossad agents using German passports while doing who knows what in the Middle East, I'm not too sure if a German passport would still be a guarantee to be treated fair in those countries.
Wouldn't like to be the poor bastard who shows his German passport to some officials there and gets the "maybe Mossad agent" treatment.

Intel agencies help each other. Greek papers wrote recently that we send

people for training in every major spy agency except Mossad because it has

an official assasinations team. Stupid not to send ? Yes ,but we live in the

century of politically correct attitudes.

I would be concerned as well. In Lebanon, we love the Germans. There are many cars with mini-German flags and symbols(not Nazi symbols lol). I was very suprised to see so many, but now things could start to change. Hopefully not, though.

It has been known for years that many secret services cooperate with german institutions because of Germanys good reputation in middle-eastern and former eastern-bloc countries - nothing new.

Other identities such as the mentioned canadian or NZ passports however are used because they help keeping a low profile as an effect of the relative neutrality of these countries.
